In tower, Carpenter's and Laborer's work to be completed -

Brick walk to be laid from rear gate to house and soil placed on surface of garden.

Cape Hancock Light Station. Wash Ty.

Completed new house and frame for fog bell in place of those destroyed by the blast of the 15" gun - Dimensions as follows. House 10 feet square by 8 feet high. Balloon frame weather boarded, painted white. Bell frame is 8 1/2 feet high from the floor and made of 10 in square timber.

In the Light House the plate glass that was broken has been replaced.

Per contract with C.F. Brown dated June 19, 1871, the new dwelling for light keeper is in course of construction, the brickwork being completed and frame up.

Sir: I have the honor to submit the following report of Light House operations the month of September.1871.

Yaquina Light House Oregon Painting entirely finished. Brick walk laid from house to rear gate. Soil placed on surface of garden.

Lampist had not arrived in September-which caused the delay in putting up Lantern- which awaited his services

Probable work in October- Total completion of all the work after erection and lighting of Lantern.

Complete woodwork inside of Lt House. Complete Picket Fence; Garden; Transportation of Water, Sand, & Rails & Cisterns. Commence laying Post-Rail Fence enclosing Pasture.

Carpenter, Mason, Tender, with small supply of materials for light repairs urgently necessary.

Probable Operation in November Replace dangerous stove. Plaster cellar. Repair wood-work in Tower. Refloor Lantern, & cover parapet with new Zinc (Now Leaks).

New Dungeness Lt Station, W.T.

Made walk to Bell-Tower. Enclosed store-room & wood-house. Completed mason-work on Cisterns, 1 new, & 2 old. Delivered most of the Earth for the garden, & 2000 rails & posts for fence. Built about 1/2 mile of fence around pasture. Probable Operations in Nov. Complete work authorized

Admiralty Head Lt House, W. T. Put new zinc floor on Lantern parapet.

Cape Hancock Lt. Ho. W.T. Probable Operation in November Secure men, materials, & transportation for new oil house

Ediz Hook Lt Station, W. T.

Put up new stove in place of one endangering the Lt. House. Plastered Cellar, so as to keep the Oil Buts dry, & foundation of house in repair. Put zinc cover on parapet, in place of leaky zinc. Commenced slight repairs by Carpenter.

New Dungenness Lt. Station, W. T.

Built ways to landing. Completed painting of Tower. Built Boat House. Completed transportation of Earth & Rails, & building of fence. Made Garden. Repaired & lengthened Chimneys. Cement-plastered the cellar to keep out high tides. Finished plumbing, including repairs to troughs & pipes. Commenced inside repairs to Lt. House. Put zinc fire-board in place of paper ones. Probable Operations for December. Complete Carpenter work & painting Admiralty Head Lt Station, W. T.

Replaced leaky cover to lantern parapet with zinc.

Distance from the lighthouse. Water supply for it. How it is reached from the lighthouse. Kind and size of fog signal building or buildings.

Dwellings For Keepers Location, with reference to the light-house tower. The keeper’s dwelling is located 70 feet east from the light-house tower. Double tenant and two stories high. Materials of which built. Wood Number of rooms in each dwelling. Six Number of keepers and assistants to each dwelling. Two in one, one in the other Out houses. Wood houses, privies and stable Paths or walks on the premises. Gravel walk around the dwelling and from dwelling to tower. Area of premises enclosed, and how. W board fence runs across the point of the cape from south shore to the north shore, enclosing the entire site. The keepers dwelling is also enclosed by a neat picket fence. Area of garden. About one acre.

25 Light to moderate and fresh breeze W. to S.W. these 24 hours - little damp during 24 hours - Sea smooth - 1st asst and M. I. L. Smith putting 200 galls of Mineral oil in Oil room. Today Keeper went up north beach to see [w]reck of the sloop - Keeper went to Newport to take the mail - Left station at 2:00 am.

Left the station at 9:30 A.M. The O.P. Railroad tug crossed the Bar at 4:30 P.M. to look for a disabled steamer at was reported to be somewhere off Yaquina about 15 miles.

11 Light S. East wind these 24 hours with clear fine and cool weather. Sea quite rough. General duties for the day. Keeper returned to the station at 1:30 P.M. Steamer Willamett Valley arrived sometime during the night with the Steamer Maggie Ross in tow disabled and was towed into Yaquina bay have not learned the particulars yet.

Keeper & 2nd asst went to Newport. Keeper went over to collect date for makeing Wreck report about the diabled condition of steamer Maggie Ross. One man was found ded abord of her. Will probably get a correct report in a day or two and send to Inspector of district.

2: Light N.W. to East wind first part of 24 hours. Last part of 24 hours light East to N.W. wind. Clear, fine and cool weather during 24 hours. Sea smooth. Keeper went fishing today. 1st asst fixing garden fence. 2nd asst putting a frame of glass in cellar window.

3: Light N.W. to fresh breeze East to S.E. first part of 24 hours. Cloudy but dry. Last part of 24 hours light S.E. wind; rain showers. Sea very rough. General duties for the day. The barometer is down to 29.80 Had a light shock of Earthquake at about 8.20 P.M. from N.E. to S.W.

February 15: [continued from preceding page] from the schooner - the boat had three men. The hunter boat puller and stearer (sp). The men went to Newport to intercept them if they came that way.

16: Light East wind these 24 hours with cloud but dry weather. Sea very smooth. General duties for the day. Keeper and 1st asst went fishing today. Steamer Willamette Valley crossed the bar from San Francisco.

17: Moderate breeze to light East wind these 24 hours, first part of 24 hours cloudy but dry last part of 24 hours, clear, fine and warm. Sea very smooth. General duties for the day. 1st asst went fishing. Keeper went to Newport after supplies also to find out about the drounding (sp) of some of the crew from the Sealing schooner Oscar & Hattie. It seems a boat with 6 men in it put off from the schooner yesterday at 9 A.M. about 14 miles north West of the light (house, presumably) to land on the beach about 18 miles north of the light to hunt from the three men that did no return to the schooner the 14th and while going through the surf the boat capsized and drowned 5 men the Capt was one of them, his name is A.M. Gault. The schooner sailed past the light this morning at 9 A.M. and lowered a boat and came ashore at the light, landed a man and went to Newport to send word up to Yaquina and have a tug tow the schooner into Newport, which she did. There are still fifteen men on board the schooner yet. Had three visitors.

18: Light variable winds and calm first part of 24 hours. Last part of 24 hours light North wind with fair weather. During 24 hours Sea very smooth. Keeper making out report about the drownding (sp) of five men off the Schooner Oscar & Hattie. Steamer Willamette Valley sailed at 2 P.M. today for San Francisco. 1st Asst spading in the garden. 2nd asst went to Newport to see a sick person. Left at 9.30 A.M.

19: Light North wind and calm with light rain showers first part of 24 hours. Last part of 24 hours light N. West wind fair weather. Sea very smooth. Some of the crew of the Schooner Oscar & Hattie went up the beach to see if they could find any of the bodies that were drowned. General duties for the day. 1st asst went fishing, spading in his garden and went to Newport. Isaac L. Smith, 2nd asst returned to the station at 11.30 A.M.

20: Light N.W. to S. East and South breeze these 24 hours, first part of 24 hours damp. Last part of 24 hours light rain. Sea smooth. General duties for the day. The boat that the Capt and 4 men that were drowned from the Oscar & Hattie came ashore on the beach at the light house and was picked up by Keepers and William Megginson and 4 others and put up where it is safe from the breakers. 1st asst working in the garden.

21: Moderate to light Gale S. to S.W. first part of 24 hours. Last part of 24 hours strong breeze S.W. squalls with rain showers during 24 hours. Sea rough. General duties for the day. William Megginson carried off the sail belonging to the boat on the beach.

22: Fresh breeze S.W. to light S. to S.E. wind with rain showers first part of 24 hours. Last part of 24 hours light North wind, fair weather. Sea moderately smooth. General duties for the day. 1st asst went to Newport.

27: Light variable winds and little damp first part of 24 hours. Last part of 24 hours light wind to moderate and fresh breeze N.W. clear fine weather. Sea very smooth. General duties for day. Steamer Willamett Valley sailed today. Keeper making out a bill of lumber for repair of fence & steps.

28: Light N.W. to East wind first part of 24 hours. Last part of 24 hours moderate to fresh breeze to a gale. E. to S.E. and South with rain most of the 24 hours. Sea quite rough. General duties for the day. 1st ass't went fishing. The barometer went down to 29.80???

29: Gale to fresh breeze South these 24 hours with rain most of 24 hours. Sea little rough. General duties for the day. The barometer down to 29.90. Keeper went to Newport after the mail and supplies.

30: Light S Wind to moderate and fresh breeze S. & S.E. these 24 hours. First part of 24 hours light rain. Last part of 24 hours fair weather. Sea quite smooth. Keeper & 1st ass't went fishing. Keeper fixing hen coop. 1st ass't also went to Newport.

Steamer Willamett crossed bar from San Francisco. 1st ass't went fishing and to Newport after the mail. The barometer is down to 29.90 at 4.P.M. U.S. Light House Tender passed pay??? the rap??? going South to attend to the buoys at Yaquina bay.

4: Moderate breeze to light N.W. wind with clear fine weather during first part of 24 hours. Last part of 24 hours cloudy but dry. Sea very smooth. General duties for day. Keeper and 2nd ass't went to Newport today.

5: Light S. to S.E. wind with fair weather these 24 hours. Sea very smooth. General duties for the day. Steamer Willamett Valley sailed today. Keeper went to Newport on May 5th, 1892 Inspection Important business. Left the Station at 9 A.M. The barometer stands 30.8 at 1 P.M. today. U.S. Light House tender arrived at 5 P.M. Inspector landed and made inspection and left for Astoria at 5.30 P.M.

6: Light N.W. to variable winds these 24 hours with fair and warm weather. Sea very smooth. General duties for the day. 1st ass't went fishing. 2nd ass't went to Newport. Keeper returned to the station at 1 P.M.

7: Light S.W. to South wind with frequent rain & hail showers. Sea very smooth. General duties for the day. The barometer is going up stands 30.22 at 7 P.M. Keeper went to Newport on important business.

8: Light S.E. wind & calm first part of 24 hours. Last part of 24 hours light N.W. wind fair and dry weather during the 24 hours. Sea very smooth. General duties for the day. Had four visitors today. Keeper and 1st ass't went fishing today.

9: Light N.W. wind with fair weather during first part of 24 hours. Last part of 24 hours light South to N.W. wind, rain. Sea very smooth. Keeper went to Newport on business. 1st and 2nd ass't painting roof of store house, 1st ass't quarters, and Oil house.

10: Strong to fresh and moderate breeze South these 24 hours. First part of 24 hours rain, last part of 24 hours fair weather. Sea quite smooth. Keeper & 2nd ass't mixing paint to paint buildings. 1st ass't working on the road and went to Newport today. 1st ass't Edward Rice and 2nd ass't Isaac L. Smith putting 200 galls of Mineral oil in Oil room today.

May

23: [continued from preceding page] on the wreck of the St. Charles, they are not quite so well as they were here at the Station. The first mate of the St. Charles is paying the expenses of death of Capt and leaves for San Francisco tomorrow. 15 of the crew went down to San Francisco this morning on Willamett Valley.

24: Moderate and fresh breeze N.W. these 24 hours. First part of 24 hours high dry fog. Last part of 24 hours fair weather. Sea smooth. Keepers painting dome and parapet & scraping rust off iron railing preparatory to painting it black.

25: Moderate breeze N.W. to light S.E. wind first part of 24 hours. Last part of 24 hours light variable winds with little cloudy weather. First part clear fine weather. Sea smooth. Keepers painting brackets fixing stage for painting tower & mixing paint. 1st ass't went to Newport.

26: Light wind to moderate & fresh breeze N.W. these 24 hours. First part of 24 hours little damp. Last part of 24 hours clear fine weather. Sea smooth. Keepers whitewashing and painting Oil House and working on the rhoad today.

27: Moderate to light N.W. wind and dry first part of 24 hours. Last part of 24 hours light variable to S.W. and South wind with light rain. Sea smooth. Keepers painting the main part of the tower white from brackets to base today.

28: Light South to S.W. wind these 24 hours with light rain during these 24 hours. Sea smooth. General duties for the day. 1st ass't whitewashing in his quarters. Keeper went to Newport to order the lumber to do the needed repairs at the station.

29: Light S.West to N. West to moderate breeze these 24 hours. First part of 24 hours light rain and fog showers. Last part of 24 hours cloudy but dry weather. Sea quite smooth. General duties for day. 1st ass't weeding out his garden.

30: Light N.W. wind with light fog shower first part of 24 hours. Last part of 24 hours light to moderate breeze N.W. clearing weather. Sea smooth. 1st ass't whitewashing fences and painting base of tower black. Keeper and 2nd ass't went to Newport. Had four visitors today.

31: Light N.W. wind and calm these 24 hours. First part little cloudy. Last part clear fine and warm weather. Sea smooth. Keeper and 1st ass't painting railing and parapet and painting roof of Oil House. Steamer Willamett arrived today. Had six visitors today.

June

1: Light South to N. West wind with rain showers these 24 hours. Sea smooth. Steamer Willamett Valley sailed at 4 P.M. for San Francisco and took the two men that were burned so bad that were from the St. Charles to the hospital at San Francisco. Keeper went to Newport on business. 1st ass't painting and whitewashing in his quarters today.

2: Light variable wind & calm with frequent light rain showers during first part of 24 hours. Sea smooth. The barometer is up to 30.50. Keepers whitewashing fences and painting the lattice work green on front porch of Keeper's dwelling.

3: Light N.W. wind with frequent rain showers first part of 24 hours. Last part of 24 hours fair weather. Sea smooth. The barometer 30.40. Keepers cleaning paint work in lantern preparing to paint it also cleaning illuminating apparatus. 1st ass't working on road today.

4: Light variable winds and calm first part of 24 hours, cloudy but dry. Last part of 24 hours light to moderate and fresh breeze South with light rain showers. Sea smooth. Keeper painting the interior of lantern white, sash, & etc.

5: Light South to S. East wind with frequent rain showers first part of 24 hours. Last part of 24 hours light variable winds and calm with fine & warm weather. sea smooth. General duties for the day. Had four visitors today. Keeper working in garden today.
