Probable Operation in November - Replace dangerous stove. Plaster cellar. Repair wood-work in Tower. Refloor Lantern, & cover parapet with new Zinc (Now Leaks).

New Dungeness Lt Station, W.T.

Made walk to Bell-Tower. Enclosed store-room & wood-house. Completed mason-work on Cisterns, 1 new, & 2 old. Delivered most of the Earth for the garden, & 2000 rails & posts for fence. Built about 1/2 mile of fence around pasture. Probable Operations in Nov. Complete work authorized -

Admiralty Head Lt House, W. T. Put new zinc floor on Lantern parapet.

Cape Hancock Lt. Ho. W.T. Probable Operation in November Secure men, materials, & transportation for new oil house

Sir: I have the honor to make a Report of Operations for the month of November, 1872. Cape Foulweather Lt Station, Ogn - Received cargo of Materials at Newport, & hauled same to L.H. Site. Brick work finished to within 2 1/2 feet of top of tower. Floors laid. Cement wash & white wash finished on outside, and 1 coat white-wash on inside walls. Carpenter work finished on Tower & oil-house. Parapet plates put up. Continued Painting wood & metal work. Probable Operations for December- Finish brick-work. Put in new landing & 2 flights of stairs. Clear away scaffolding. Commence putting up Lantern &Lens if new landing received. Cape Hancock Lt Station, W. T. Purchased materials & secured transportation & men for work. Probable Operations in December. Transport Men & Materials to L.H. site. If weather permits, & transportation to landing on beach to L.H. site can be secured so as to cause no delay, the station walls will be built & the Oil-House enclosed-

Put up new stove in place of one endangering the Lt. House. Plastered Cellar, so as to keep the Oil Buts dry, & foundation of house in repair. Put zinc cover on parapet, in place of leaky zinc. Commenced slight repairs by Carpenter.

New Dungenness Lt. Station, W. T.

Built ways to landing. Completed painting of Tower. Built Boat House. Completed transportation of Earth & Rails, & building of fence. Made Garden. Repaired & lengthened Chimneys. Cement-plastered the cellar to keep out high tides. Finished plumbing, including repairs to troughs & pipes. Commenced inside repairs to Lt. House. Put zinc fire-board in place of paper ones. Probable Operations for December. Complete Carpenter work & painting - Admiralty Head Lt Station, W. T.

Replaced leaky cover to lantern parapet with zinc.

Ediz Hook Lt Station, W.S.

Thoroughly completed zinc parapet covering. Examined Keeper & Assistant in company with Capt. Spotts.

New Dungeness Lt. Station, W.S. Purchased and shipped materials for completion of repairs. Put floor in Boat House & battens on sides. Finished door, & furnished paddock for same. Connected work-house with cistern by covered pipe. Put coat paint on Boat House & 2 coats on inside of Store Room. Inspected work of Repairs, & examined Keeper & Assistant with Capt. Spotts.

Probable Operations for April Put eave-troughs (galvanized iron) in place of defective ones on Store Room. Refit pump in Cistern. Put 2" coat paint on Boat-House; 1 coat paint on inside & outside of store-room. Put stakes to fence. Build 60 ft of new ways for Boat. Repair Boat Carriage. Connect Storeroom with Cisterns. Paint Roofs of Storeroom & Boat House.

Examined Keepers & Assistants at Admiralty Head & Smiths Island Lt. Houses, with Capt. Spotts.

23: [continued from preceding page] on the wreck of the St. Charles, they are not quite so well as they were here at the Station. The first mate of the St. Charles is paying the expenses of death of Capt and leaves for San Francisco tomorrow. 15 of the crew went down to San Francisco this morning on Willamett Valley.

24: Moderate and fresh breeze N.W. these 24 hours. First part of 24 hours high dry fog. Last part of 24 hours fair weather. Sea smooth. Keepers painting dome and parapet & scraping rust off iron railing preparatory to painting it black.

25: Moderate breeze N.W. to light S.E. wind first part of 24 hours. Last part of 24 hours light variable winds with little cloudy weather. First part clear fine weather. Sea smooth. Keepers painting brackets fixing stage for painting tower & mixing paint. 1st ass't went to Newport.

26: Light wind to moderate & fresh breeze N.W. these 24 hours. First part of 24 hours little damp. Last part of 24 hours clear fine weather. Sea smooth. Keepers whitewashing and painting Oil House and working on the rhoad today.

31: Light N.W. wind and calm these 24 hours. First part little cloudy. Last part clear fine and warm weather. Sea smooth. Keeper and 1st ass't painting railing and parapet and painting roof of Oil House. Steamer Willamett arrived today. Had six visitors today.

June

1: Light South to N. West wind with rain showers these 24 hours. Sea smooth. Steamer Willamett Valley sailed at 4 P.M. for San Francisco and took the two men that were burned so bad that were from the St. Charles to the hospital at San Francisco. Keeper went to Newport on business. 1st ass't painting and whitewashing in his quarters today.

2: Light variable wind & calm with frequent light rain showers during first part of 24 hours. Sea smooth. The barometer is up to 30.50. Keepers whitewashing fences and painting the lattice work green on front porch of Keeper's dwelling.

3: Light N.W. wind with frequent rain showers first part of 24 hours. Last part of 24 hours fair weather. Sea smooth. The barometer 30.40. Keepers cleaning paint work in lantern preparing to paint it also cleaning illuminating apparatus. 1st ass't working on road today.

4: Light variable winds and calm first part of 24 hours, cloudy but dry. Last part of 24 hours light to moderate and fresh breeze South with light rain showers. Sea smooth. Keeper painting the interior of lantern white, sash, & etc.

5: Light South to S. East wind with frequent rain showers first part of 24 hours. Last part of 24 hours light variable winds and calm with fine & warm weather. sea smooth. General duties for the day. Had four visitors today. Keeper working in garden today.

9: Light N. West to East wind first part of 24 hours. Last part of 24 hours light variable winds and calm with fair weather during 24 hours. Sea moderately smooth. Keepers painting on pickett fence and painted store & chicken house.

Steamer Willamette sailed for Sanfrancisco - A tug came up from Sanfrancisco to tow the Alac Blanchard to Sanfrancisco and left Yaquina today at 4:30 P.M.

May 21: Keeper went to Newport to take Mr. Rice 1st Asst who is on his way to Portland to see a specialist about his eye as it is getting worse every day. Had two visitor today. Left the Station at 9:30 A.M.

22: Calm and light West wind with fair weather first part of 24 hours - Last part of 24 hours moderate to fresh breeze South to N. West with rain showers. Sea smooth - General duties for the day - Keeper & 2nd asst went fishing.

23: Moderate to fresh breeze N. West these 24 hours first part of 24 hours rain showers - Last pat of 24 hours fair weather - Sea quite rough - Keeper and 2nd asst putting up stage and painting brackets black.

24: Moderate to fresh and strong breeze N. West these 24 hours with fair weather - Sea moderately smooth - Keeper and 2nd asst finished painting the Brackets on tower - and whitewashed some fences today.

25: Fresh to moderate breeze N. West these 24 hours - first part of 24 hours fair weather - Last part of 24 hours some damp fog - Sea smooth - Keeper and 2nd asst whitewashing fences around the cape.

26: Calm & light N. West wind first part of 24 hours - Last part of 24 hours moderate to fresh and strong breeze N.W. with fair weather during 24 hours - Sea moderately smooth - Keeper went over to Newport to get some supplies and get the mail - U.S. Steamer Manzenita passed by this light at 2 P.M. going south stoped and placed the bouy off of Yaquina bar. Steamer Willamette Valley arrived off the bar at 4 P.M. and crossed in at 5:30 P.M. from San Francisco - Keeper and 2nd asst started to paint on the tower did paint a little but had to stop there being to much wind - Manzanita passed into Newport at 7 P.M.

27: Moderate to fresh breeze N. West these 24 hours first part of 24 hours little damp - last part of 24 hours fair weather - Sea smooth - General duties for the day - Keeper and 2nd asst working in the garden - The barometer stands 29.87. The U.S. Steamer Manzanita came out of Yaquina bay at 8:30 A.M. and steamed away south. Willamette Valley sailed for San Francisco at 7:30 P.M.

28: Light N. West wind with fog showers first part of 24 hours - Last part of 24 hours light West to N. West wind with fair weather - Sea very smooth - Keeper went to Newport after the mail - 2nd Asst working in garden.

29: Moderate breeze N. West with rain showers first part of 24 hours - Last part of 24 hours light N. West wind fair weather - Sea quite rough - Keeper & 2nd asst painting on tower & base & Oil House - Also cleaning & rakeing up the chicken yard.

30: Light wind to moderate breeze N. West these 24 hours with fair weather during 24 hours - Sea quite smooth - Keeper and 2nd asst. painting iron railings & parapet black - Also painted water tank & stepps outside of Keeper Dwelling. Also celler doors.

31: Light South wind with light rain first part of 24 hours - last part of 24 hours light variable winds to N.W. wind fair weather - Sea moderately smooth - Keeper and 2nd asst working on the road & whitewashing on the garden fence.

June 1: Calm & light variable winds these 24 hours with fair and warm weather - Sea quite smooth - General duties for day - 2nd asst went to Newpot to take & get mail - U.S. Steamer Manzanita laying off of Yaquina bar at 4 A.M. she passed this light at 10 A. M. going North.

2: Fresh breeze N. West these 24 hours first part of 24 hours light rain showers - Last part of 24 hours fair weather - Sea moderately smooth - Keeper whitewashig garden fence also painting stepps around dwelling & mixing white paint to paint office & Oil-House.

3: Moderate to fresh & strong breeze N. West these 24 hours with fair weather during 24 hours - Sea a little rough - Keeper & 2nd asst painting office & Oil-House white - Also painted pump frame & Keeper back stepps of dwelling. A gentleman two ladies and two boys came at the dwelling at 12 noon to go up in the tower - Told them they could go up after dinner which would be in about an hour but they would not wait.

4: Light variable winds and calm first part of 24 hours - Last part of 24 hours fresh breeze East clear fine and warm during 24 hours - Sea very smooth - General duties for the day - Keeper went fishing - Keeper & 2nd showing seventeen visitors in tower.

3: Light south west to north west winds rain squalls sea mod Bar 29.88. Keeper inspected station and quarters of asst keepers.

4: Light variable westerly winds showers sea smooth Bar 30.01. Keeper and 2nd asst working around the grounds. 1st asst went to Newport for mail.

5: Variable westerly winds squally showers sea smooth Bar 30.02. Keeper and asst keeepers working in garden and in the shop.

6: Fresh south east breeze occational showers sea rough Bar 29.90. 1st and 2nd asst keepers working in there respective quarters. Keeper went to newport for mail.

7: Light to moderate north west breeze to calm clear dry sea smooth bar 30.02. General duties for the day. 2nd asst showing 4 visitors in the tower.

8: Calm to moderate north west breeze clear dry sea mod Bar 30.01. Keeper and asst keepers cleaned all white paint work in lantern & watch room. Swept wall of tower top & bottom.

9: Fresh north west breeze cloudy dry sea rough Bar 29.60. Keeper and 1st asst painted all white iron interior of lantern. 2nd asst went to Newport for mail.

10: Moderate north west breeze squally lt showers sea moderate Bar 29.68. Keeper and asst keepers cleaning and painting watch room of tower.

11: Fresh northerly breeze cloudy dry sea rough Bar 29.66. Keeper and 2nd asst cleaning and painting watch room and tower windows. 1st asst went to Newport for mail.

12: Light variable west wind showers to light south wind sea moderate Bar 29.90. Keeper and asst keepers scrubbed tower stairs and all paint work in work shop on north side.

13: Calm to light northerly breeze clear dry sea smooth Bar 29.98. 1st and 2nd asst painted tower stairs all ??? half of tread & balister??? keeper went to newport for mail.

14: Calm to light northerly wind cloudy dry sea smooth Bar 30.04. General duties for the day.

15: Light northerly breeze to calm dry sea smooth Bar 30.20. Keeper and asst keepers painted brackets and panels also window sashes under lower balcony outside.

16: Light west wind showers damp sea smooth Bar 30.20. Keeper and 1st asst scrubbed south work room of tower. 2nd asst went to Newport for mail. 1st asst showed 8 visitors in tower.

17: Moderate south west breeze showers misty damp sea moderate Bar 30.18. Keeper 1st & 2nd asst painted all windows and window sashes in tower hall & work room & blackened the heater.

April 18: Station inspected. Observations and orders: There is not enough system order and cleanliness in the storeroom workshop etc. Store a place for everything and keep everything in its place. Tear down the old contractors house, the old carriage shed and the waste tank at the barn. Scale iron on balcony of tower especially on iron ladder. White wash inside of tower. Continue painting when necessary. Steny L. Beck, Inspector .

19th: Variable westerly winds squally showers sea smooth Bar 30.10. Keeper and asst keepers working in the shop.

20th: Variable westerly winds showers sea smooth Bar 29.96. Keeper and asst keepers painted roof - upper & lower gallery & railing parapet & floor of gallery. Scaled iron rust from iron ladder.

21: Westerly winds showers to clear sea smooth Bar 30.02. General duties for the day. Keeper and assts showing visitors in tower.

22: East to south west wind clear till 3:00 P.M. then showers sea smooth Bar 30.02. Scraped and red leaded foundation and water table of tower. Painting oil house & lattice front of privy.

23: Light south east breeze rain squally sea moderate Bar 29.96. Keeper and 1st asst put soft patch on storm door of Tower. 2nd asst went to Newport for mail.

24: Light east to south west winds showers sea smooth Bar 29.90. Keeper and asst keepers polishing lens. Keeper made inspection of all keepers quarters.

25: Light northerly breeze to calm clear dry sea smooth Bar 30.02. Keeper and asst keepers painting oil house lattice work & scraped and painted Tower foundation. 1st asst went to newport for mail.

26: Light northerly wind to calm clear sea smooth Bar 29.94. Keeper and asst keepers finished painting oil house, lattice work, and Tower foundation.

27: Light to squally southerly breeze showers misty sea mod Bar 29.66. 1st and 2nd assts washing clothes etc. Keeper went to Newport for mail and supplies.

28: Light southerly wind rain misty damp sea smooth Bar 29.25. General duties for the day. 1st asst showing visitors in the tower.

29: Fresh south east breeze rain misty sea rough Bar 29.70. Keeper and asst keepers polished all brass work in the tower and work room.

30: Fresh southerly breeze squally rain sea mod Bar 29.40. Keeper and 1st asst working in the shop. 2nd asst went to Newport for mail and supplies. Recvd from ??? invoice ??? for hauling supplies. From ??? Invoice of 6 ??? time.

1 Light northerly breeze cloudy dry sea smooth. Bar 29.86. Keeper and asst keepers scrubbing tower stairs and windows.

2 Station inspected this date. It was found to be in an efficient condition. No special orders were issued. Henry L. Berch???. Insp.

2 Light east to fresh south east breeze dry to rain sea rough. Bar. Keeper and assts painted lantern floor and pedestal of lens metalic brown.

3 Light to fresh south east wind rain stormy sea rough. Bar 29.7. Keeper and assts painted metalic brown from 3 landing to top of stairs of floor of lens also the dead light deck of lantern.

4 Fresh south east breeze heavy rain sea rough. Bar 29.72. Keeper and asst keepers cleaned all lead color ??? work in work room of tower and in hall.

5 Fresh south east breeze to half a gale rain sea rough. Bar 29.84. Keeper and asst keepers painted tower stairs from 3d landing to bottom of tower also radiator.

6 Fresh south east to lt north east wind showers to clear sea smooth. Bar 30.04. General duties for the day.

7 Fresh south west breeze rain sea rough. Bar 29.88. Keeper and asst keepers painting tower stairs, work room, window frames and door of tower.

8 Light south west wind misty to westerly wind dry sea smooth. Bar. Keeper and asst keepers painting lead color in work room of tower and hall.

9 Light east to south east wind clear dry sea smooth. Bar 30.04. Keeper and assts painting and scrubbed marbel floor of tower and store room. Keeper visited quarters of asst keepers.

10 Light east to south east wind cloudy dry sea smooth. Bar 29.8. Keeper and 2nd asst painting all lead color paint work in tower and work room. 1st asst went to Newport for supplies. Put 100 gallons of mineral oil in ??? tank. Polished damper tubes.

11 Fresh southerly breeze cloudy damp sea rough. Bar 29.79. Keeper and asst scrubbed and painted floor of work room south side rigged??? staging to paint tower under gallery.

12 Fresh south east breeze showers sea rough. Bar 29.82. Keeper and 1st asst working in carpenter shop. 2nd asst went to Newport for supplies.

13 Light variable winds cloudy dry sea smooth. Bar 30.04. General duties for the day. 2nd asst showed two visitors in the tower.

14 Calme and light variable winds cloudy dry sea calm. Bar 29.90. Keeper and asst keepers painted brackets and panels top of tower.

15 Calm and light south west wind to calm sea calm. Bar 29.80. Keeper went to Newport for supplies. 1st and 2nd asst washing clothes etc.

16 Light variable winds to fresh north west breeze sea mod. Bar. Keeper and asst keepers painted roof of lantern, upper and lower galery railing and parapet. Mixed 11 gall white paint to paint tower.

17 Calm to light west wind to calm sea calm. Bar 29.82. Keeper and asst keepers painted tower from upper ring to foundation plate 7:00 AM till 6:00 PM.

18 Light to fresh southerly breeze rain sea rough. Bar 29.98. Keeper and asst keepers cleaning up carpenter shop and barn.

19 Light south to north west wind clear dry sea smooth. Bar 29.96. Keeper visited quarters of asst keepers found in good condition. Keepers cleaning up grounds.

25 Calm to light southerly wind clear to misty rain sea smooth. Bar. Keeper and assts driving in nail heads and puttying hole in barn, toilet & north end carpenter shop.

26 Light west to south west winds squally showers sea smooth. Bar 29. Keeper and assts driving nails in barn & main dwelling. 2nd asst left station for Newport at 3:00 PM.

27 Light south west to west wind showers to clear sea smooth. Bar. General duties for the day. Three visitors were shown in the tower. 2nd asst returned to station at 2:30 PM.

28 Light east to south west wind showers sea smooth. Bar 29.80. Keeper and assts painted west end of carpenters shop and north and east end of barn.

29 Light south west to west wind showers sea smooth. Bar 29.98. Keeper and asst keepers working in shop. Keeper visited quarters of asst keepers found in good order.

6 Fresh south west breeze rain to light NW wind sea moderate. Bar 29.86. Keeper left station at 2 P.M. General duties for the day. 1st and 2nd asst showing visitors in tower.
