Foote Diary: January 5th, 1985
Snow is very much still with us, thought it stopped falling in the night. By midmorning the temperature was a little above freezing and some thawing began.
Huger and Gwyn called again from Venice; having a great time, they say, - including Rosette, who came along with Hugs. They’re staying at the Danieli, a luxury hotel, and have made the rounds of all the major galleries? and churches with the help of a good printed guide. Sounds like a great trip.

Back home, played Haydn quartets and read the Spotsylvania section of Vol. III, provoked by a lecture from a Dartmouth official, Howard Roffin?, who is considering a book on the battle and wants to know whether I think it’s worthwhile. I do indeed, having had really written me myself in that section of the volume. What a encouraging reply.
Elvis Presley “Jam Session” on TV in celebration of his would-have-been 50th birthday.
