New York. Breakfast in Rose Room; back up to room; then set out for 20th century on 70th street just east of Madison. Interesting meeting including witness testimony by Frances Fitzgerald, who wrote the Vietnam book Fire in the Lake. Excellent lunch as always. Then the afternoon meeting- a review of 30-odd “propositions,” previously arrived at by discussion. Adjourned at 3:30.

I walked back on Madison, 70th to 44th, stopping en route to buy a pair of “boxer” shorts at Paul Stuart. Returned to hotel at 4:30, where Gwyn was having a cheese sandwich and a potato after a brief shopping expedition at Sak’s. Rested, bathed. At 6:30 went down and finally got a cab to Il Monello, Italian restaurant on 2nd Ave. near 78th where we meet Bob and Ann Ellen Rossen for dinner. I had a polenta dish for appetizer then chicken with sausage and black olives. Gwyn had smoked salmon and Italian calf’s liver. I paid for dinner- first time out of many meals for the four of us. Back at work by 9:15. Rested and read Tacitus till midnight; went to sleep leaving Gwyn to finish the McCarthy.
