June 1st, 1985 Slept till nearly 8. Plumber came at 9 but could do little to back up outdated parts for toilet and wash-stand; old hand will be here Monday morning presumably with replacement parts! Gwyn read Cox article in Southern Review. Then I packaged and took it to post office for mailing to bob Loomis, who will get it Xeroxed and returned to me- my only copy. Mail cost $2.40 first-class. Before going to NY I sent a check to LSU for Gwyn’s subscription to the review beginning with the current issue.) Record high for the day: 96 degrees.

June 2nd, 1985 Still hot and getting hotter. After lunch I drove down to Morningside and spent the better part of an hour with Tunkie. Hard to tell whether he’s worse or better; but there’s no doubt he’s gravely ailing. No good way to go. Walked two miles shirtless to het some sun; came back, showered, and put on my pajamas. Late Show, a foreign film “Moon in the Gutters,” with Natasha KInski. Overdone art film; poor.

June 3rd, 1985 Plumber roto-rooted sink drain, fixed hot-water tap in bathroom. Air conditioning repairman restarted large backyard unit. Phone call at 8:30 informed me that Margaret was in jail and had been there since Saturday, arrested on assault and battery charges; trial at 9 a.m. At 9:30 she called for me to come pay her $100 bond and get her out. I did so after an hour’s wait at the “Tower Level,” and had to listen to her constant xxxxxxx obscenities all the way to her home, where I let her out. Back home, I had another call from her asking help; which I refused. Received Xerox of Southern Review article from a fellow professor of Cox’s at Dartmouth, Hubard Coffine. I cut it marginally yo size it and mailed it to Rosen; requested him to return it when he’s through with it. Book shelf; Kennedy’s Legs and Karrow’s Vietnam.

June 4th, 1985 Mary still not here, though her last-week’s money is and has been on my desk since Friday. Opus 2; drove out to get my Walkman lubricated or repaired; left it in shop, but then decided that I needed a spare. Bought a $120 (for $100 plus tax) Aiwa HS-P07. Sounds good. This way – if I get the Sony back, repaired- I’ll never be without a machine. Read some 70 pages of Legs; am disappointed, so far, on what seems to be a tough talk gangster story. My hope is that it will gather steam as it moves ahead. Alas, on my two-mile walk and found the cassette played defective; walking jogged it off and on. Must take it back tomorrow. Late movie: resaw Dustin Hoffman in “Lenny.”

June 5th, 1985 At 8 o’clock took Gwyn to leave her car in Park, or, rather picked up her up after she left it for repairs. Home again, read Legs till 10 o’clock opening time at opus 2, then drove and exchanged the Awia Walkman for another in case the last was defective. I’ll give it a try, then turn it in if it’s faulty. Read Kennedy’s Legs all afternoon; finished it around 4. It improved as it went along, but never got really as good as I hoped it would be. Received from James M. Cox English Department at Dartmouth, another Xerox of his Southern Review artile, along with a letter saying he hadn’t written earlier because he wanted the piece itself to be the first letter to me. Took Gwyn to barbeque restaurant over on central; She had a rack of ribs, I had a brisket jumbo sandwich. Finished Legs.
