December 1st, 1985
Slept till 8; good way to bring in December. Hearty breakfast continued effort to regain lost ten pounds and get back in shape for my next medical venture. TV; Brinkley Report at noon; short nap afterward. Walked 1 1/2 miles without tiring, except for a little weakness of my legs when it was over. mary Ann and Bryan Eagle came by for drinks from 3:$5 to 5:#0. Lean Cuisine (Oriental Beef) For dinner followed by ice cream and Hershey bar. First episode of Bleak House on TV; seven more to come.

December 2nd, 1985
Mary back. My convalescence continued apace: less discomfort and more agility every day. Leftover boiled beef for dinner, followed by a TV program on "The Brain-Madness." Began Boswell's Johnson, which I've never read from start to finish.

December 3rd, 1985 Haircut, after five-week gap. Continued Boswell, which I'll read while waiting for Burkhardts Civilization of the Renaissance in Italy, and read this morning ( in the Modern libary XXXXXXX) from the poosh? shelf and due early next week. Cold: up 32 degrees by midday. johnny here for dinner: steak for him, lamb chops for Gwyn and me. Opened case of '81 Cours Pavillion. Alas, not nearly as good as '78.

Dr. Soloway 2:30 p.m. December 4th, 1985 2:30 appointment with Dr. Mark Soloway, 1750 Madison, recommended by Johnny after advising with Texas authorities. Encouraging; for one thing, he said I need do nothing until after New Years. Then a choice can be made between surgery and radiation. He also suggested better odds than anyone has done before. I'm much relieved. About 1/3rd through Boswell. Book arrived in mail from Bill Pearson: "Son of the Morning Star," on xxxxxxx of Custer and Little Big Horn. Will start it tomorrow. Cold continues: subfreezing at night, mid-forties in the afternoon.

December 5th, 1985 Began the Custer book and like it - scattered approach, but purposely so. Good subject. Bundled up good (in Goretex jacket) for 1 1/2 - mile walk in early afternoon.
