Saturday, February 1st [1986] Diarrhea much improved by a single Lomotil tablet. Wrapped the Mozart cassette for mailing to Rubin when I write in answer to possible reprinting of Tournament or Jordan County—primarily the latter. Read first half of Tolstoy’s “Kreutzer Sonata,” a preachy affair, nothing as good as “Ivan Ilych.” But I’ll keep on with it, + follow it with “Master & Man,” The fourth of his stories to be read for the Wolf9 this month. Walked two miles, then came back + finished “The Kreutzer Sonata,” which I played when I walked. The second half of the story was much better than the first half—just as I thought on two previous readings.

Sunday, February 2nd [1986] Sunday breakfast, cereal + a banana; weight, 159, the same for the past two weeks + the same as when I left for Ochsner in November. Read Tolstoy’s “Master + Man”—next to Ivan Ilych, the best of the four tales. Replied to Louis Rubin’s letter suggesting that his Algonquin Press reprint one of my novels; I chose Tournament or Jordan County, preferably the latter. Also packaged for mailing the Mozart Cassette I made for him. Art Exhibit at Alice Bingham’s gallery, buffet dinner afterwards. Home by 9:30

Tuesday, February 4th [1986] Long wait for radiation; mixup in rearward signals. Out by 10 all the same. Annual $10,000 arrived from Random11; must get it to bank tomorrow + renew the matured CD. Continued Orchard Keeper. In afternoon, drove to the bank + deposited the Random royalties in my checking account. I’ll put $7500 of it with the $17,500 CD + thus bring it up to $25,000. Weather continues warm but rainy.

Wednesday, February 5th [1986] Radiation. Warm weather continues; yard plants—junsuils, lilies—are sprouting along driveway + out back. Finished rereading The Orchard Keeper. A good book; more specifically, a good writer. Walked 2.5; played Sibelius’ 2nd Symphony.
