Tuesday, April 1st[1986] Call Hugh Smith at 9; got time to make a 1:30 appointment for me at Campbell Clinic.Clinic doctor reassured me, after examination + three more x-rays, that my foot is healing more or less on schedule. Mani thing, he said, is keep it elevated as much as possible: Ace bandage does little good, + hot-water soaking none at all. Began re-reading Light in August, Billy reed’s Wolf selection; meeting a week from tonight. Dr. Rocco A. CalandruccioNo: Carnesate.

Soloway 11:45 Friday, April 4th[1986] Continued Light in August, reading slowly to assess the full effect.Midday appointment with urologist, Dr. Soloway. Blood test + rubber-glove inspection: verdict good indeed. Said if he didn’t know from previous examination, he’d never suspect I had anything whatever wrong with my prostate. Took my first outdoor walk in more than three weeks; only about half of 3/8 of a mile—my foot started hurting + I turned back across CBU campusJohnny here for dinner; lamb chops, potatoes, salad; Pavillon red. [ Christian Brothers University, located on East Parkway, close to Foote’s home. ]

Saturday, April 5th[1986] Yesterday’s walk was a mistake; pain + lameness returned—a need to crutch to get around house. Continued Faulkner; about two-thirds through. Watched old black-+-white movie; Maugham’s“Quartet,” which I remember from back in the 50’s; all four tales rather amusing, but only the kite segment was really good. Horror movie followed—all but unwatchable; I fell asleep about midway.(Reception at Joe + Carolyn McCarn’s for two busloads of doctors here at convention; stay from 6:15 to about 7:30.)
