Bank; deposited $200 of the Burns $350 check. Continued the Finley explication of Thucydides. Talked with Chris at RLR; Vintage royalties expected soon; also Cybill’s renewal of option. good thing, too: they’re badly needed after the heavy drains of the past two weeks. Midafternoon, walked two miles in 35 minutes; heavy heat--96®. After a shower, took Hugs to see Aunt Libba in her apartment over on Central; 4:40 to 5:30. Dinner: lamb chops + rattatuille (sp?) with a bottle of Cours Pavillon.

Slept till unheard of 8:30; cereal breakfast; then back to Thucydides.Paid 1987 house + auto insurance ($1289 plus $570) balance: $1124. $200 of this was for the Lancia, $864 for house; gwyn owes the latter XXXX. Drove down to post office + mailed it to glen falls, NY.
Finished Finley’s Thucydides. Splendid.V.S. Naipaw + his companion Margaret Murry came by for drinks between 7 & 830; pleasant visit, but we declined going on to dinner with them + a couple from Tupelo.

Sunday, August 23rd
Cooler weather promised by forecast; hope so. Maybe now I can get back to regular walking. In afternoon, rode over to the Plaza + saw Stanley Kubrick’s “Full Metal Jacket.” Didn’t much like it, really, but I may like it much better when I see it a few months later—as I have done with other Kubrick films.

Received softback Civil War royalty statement from Vintage; Found, to my horror, that they omitted sales of the three-volume boxed sets—which makes a difference of more than $6000/7000. Their figure (after deducting of the $15,000 advance) is $10,540; mine is $16,000 to $17,000. Called Chris Tomasino at RLR, then waited for her to call back at nearly 5 oclock. She said she too had been wondering about the statement + had been in touch with Vintage—hampered by the fact that Carolyn Reidy is on vacation. She’ll stay after it, get it straightened out, + XX XXXXXX everything as soon as possible. Read Hemingway stories in preparation for tomorrow night’s Wolf River dinner.

Wolf River--Deans Tuesday, August 25th
Continued reading Hemingway stories, mainly the Nick Adams ones, which we discussed at tonight’s Wolf River meeting; Fred Deans host. Passed out six copies of Tournament, my selection for next month’s dinner on the 22d; completes the so-far “Works of S.F.” as topics for club discussion. Insurance inspector came by to check on the loss + replacement of my work-area air conditioner in the storm two weeks ago. Took pictures for proof of replacement. Hope he approves. Weight 159—a surprise; thought I’d gained from Hugs-welcoming food.
