Sunday, November 1st

Cereal Sunday breakfast, followed at noon by a tunafish on rye, plus buttermilk. Walked 1.5 miles in 23 mins; played Beethoven first en route, second when I got back. Cleaned fish pool, bailing out fallen leaves; three fish seem healthy enough to get through the ahead winter.

Monday, November 2nd

Start of a new week + my birth month, truly home, after two excursions--+ another still to come: New York in mid-month for Huger’s + my birthdays 13th+ 17th.

Picked up two books at Book Shelf: Literary Guide to the Bible+ Artful Partners.

Walked 2.5 miles in 38 mins.;played Mozart’s symphonies 39, 40, + 41.

Watched VCR of “Sweeny Todd the demon barber of fleet street.” Imitation Brecht, without his gifts; but I rather enjoyed it.

Picked up a four-pound brisket at Sessel’s east for boiling tomorrow; also four cans of chicken broth.

Safley = 9:45 am

Tuesday, November 3rd

Had a wart or mole removed from upper back, just below the nape of my neck. Dr Safley charged me $45, but filed for Medicare for me.

Returned “Sweeny Todd,” re drove across thestreet + got onions + turnips to go into the boiled-beef pot. Also got apples + salt pork.

Home again, cleaned + chopped onions, carrots, + celery + put them into the pot with the brisket + stock, well seasoned. Boiled it from noon (on simmer, that is)until 3:45. Cut it off + walked 2.5 in 38—same as yesterday. Strained stock; returned it to pot with beef + the vegetables for dinner.

Wednesday, November 4th

Finally came all the way down with a head cold: which, in part, reminds me to go get my annual flu shot. Made Algonquin + Northwest Airline reservations for New York visit, 12-15 November; which means we’ll be leaving a week from tomorrow + will stay sixdays==mainly to see Hugs but also to attend to several hangfire business matters with both Bobs, Loomis + Rosen.

Thursday, November 5th (Jim Lanier, 4:30 –5)

Flu shot at County Health Department despite bad headcold; no fever. Reading the Alter-Kermode Literary Guide to the Bible, a solid + fascinating work. Jim Lanier, of Rhodes history department, returned with an offer for me to give a course on the Civil War to a class of about 30 students, to meet twice a week, 1.5 hours each, from Jan. 12 to near May Day; Payment will be $7,000 or better. I told him I’d do it. On way home from flu shot I picked up some flounder filets + a head of broccoli; also a VCR of “Tinmen.” Cooked the fish for dinner, then watched the movie, which was funny.
