Marjorie spent about 8 weeks making her way from Los Angeles to Berlin by sea (via the Panama Canal). She stopped first in New York, where she grew up, to visit family and friends, and then embarked for London, then Hamburg, before arriving in Berlin on July 4, 1929.

Mumsie Darling,

I'm awfully happy. Having a perfectly marvelous time. England is grand! I love it!

I had dinner at Cousin Evelyn's Saturday night. She has a lovely old house with loads of trees & shrubbery all around it. And her children are darling. The little girl is a picture. Dark hair and eyes— pearly white teeth and apple red cheeks. And cousin Evelyn is a dear. seems rather lonely and glad of a chance to chat.

Spent yesterday at Cousin Berties. They also have a lovely home— but new and not nearly so tastefully landscaped—but of course much more grounds. They have a lovely rock garden and pool—the latter quite formal with a fountain. They also have a vegetable garden and tennis court.

In the afternoon Bertie took me and a young cousin of his Georehart Geuitennam a German(!) and are awfully nice chap to an interesting place for tea. An old home of a duelier made over into a Hotel—but the original old furniture, panelling and painted ceiling. We ate in the grounds—embankments of rodedendrons [sic: rhododendrons] around us—a perfect forest about 8 or ten feet high or more—all in bloom!

I'm at breakfast—preliminary to going up to Oxford with the girl I met on the boat. We are going up by train today and driving back tomorrow. Perhaps I'll see Bob Dalton— one of the Tech gang who has been out here for a few months. Anyway—I must run. I'll write soon again.

Love and hugs all around. You'd love it here— except for the bathrooms which aren't! One tub for umpteen people. I have what they call Bed & Breakfast for 10/6-about $2.60 per diem.

Love Marjie
