Began with light breezes from the
N ward at 6 A M set all possible sail &
steered W S W at 10 [o'clock] raised Sperm
whales at 11 [came] up with them [lowered] &
soon Struck and lost a line darted at another
but did not get hold at noon [came] a
long side & got dinner went directly off
soon struck & killed 1 and took [her?] alongside
& began to cut but [night] [came] on & we
were obliged to let [her?] alongside So
goes Lat Obsd 35:50 Longitude 3:20 west

Saturday the 5 th

Began with the wind [N?] and blowing
a heavy Gale at 2 P M the Shifted
suddenly to Sth W we [immediately] called
all hands wore Ship in hopes to be able
to cut our whale but in vain.
[Wove?] back again & let her lay Saw 1
Ship Steering E S E under short sail So

from the W ward Ship under a close
reefed main Top Sail lying by our
whale Standing hole watches with
faint hopes of Saving her at Sun set
