Ship Salem bound to N.W. [NORTH WEST] coast
Monday Morning Oct 14" 1844 This day commences with light breezes from the South at 11. O,clock AM all hands on board, [and in good spirits CROSSED OUT] Got the ship underweigh. Crew all sober and in good spirits as could be expected. At 1 PM the Pilot left us 1 1/2 miles below Cedar Island. At 6 P.M. Block Island bore North distant 10 miles
Tuesday Morning Oct 15th Commences with fresh breezes from S.S.E. with thick rainy weather number of the crew sea sick, that I escaped, in the evening took in sail, and as the wind increased, at midnight we were under double reefed top sails. it raining very hard at this time at 4 A.M. wore ship to the Eastward at 8 wore again weather thick and rainy
Wednesday October 16th Commences with heavy gale from the S.S.E. heading to the westward Jib and mainsail in At 4 P.M. wind shifted W.S.W blowing heavy, later more moderate steering SE. by E
Thursday Oct 17th Commences with fresh gales from the S.W. At 2 P.M. more moderate out reefs and set Top Gallant sails Latter part of the day more moderate, weather pleasant Wind light from N.W. steering S.E. All hands employed in fitting boats etc
