Bark Neva bound to the Pacific

Monday Sep 28th 1857

We sailed in the Bark Neva from Greenport dock under Cap Hand at 1/2 past 10 AM with a fine breeze from SW with a crew of 30 men all told. at 6 PM Montauk Point out of sight took a squall from WNW took in the light sails and double reefed Foretopsail. the hands nearly all seasick stearing for a course SE. the weather came off plesant.

Tuesday Sep 29th 1857

First part fine winds from WNW and good weather made all sail stearing SE. Mid part much the same employed in putting things in in order forward hands rather the worse for sea sickness. Latter part wind W headed more to North so ends Lat 40"06 N Long 72"00.

Wednesday, Sep 30th

First part these twenty four hours fresh winds from the North took in the light sails and double reefed the topsails stearing SE by E. Latter part winds light carriing all sail W Long 66:52 Lat 38"57 N

Thursday Oct 1st

First part light winds fro NNW stearing E by S. Mid part wind hauling more to the East stearing by the wind heading SE. Latter part blowing fresh took in light sails so ends.

Friday, Oct 2nd

First part blowing a gale from E by N took in all sail but a close reefed main topsail fore and main spencers. Mid part blowing harder sent down main royal yard. Latter part commenced raining ship heading SE by S at 10 PM the wind abating made more l sail so ends.

Saturday Oct 3rd 1857

First part moderate winds from ESE wore ship heading NW under double reefed topsails and courses set. Mid part wind hauled to the S moderate all sail stearing E with a good breeze. Latter part strong wind Long 62"46

Sunday Oct 4th

First part strong winds from SW stearing E carrying all sail. Mid part much the same. Lat part breeze rather fresher and we find that the ship leaks about 100 strokes pr hour Lat 37"04

Monday Oct 5th

First part fine weather and winds from SW stearing E. Mid part fresh winds carrying all sail stearing E by S Weather looks some squally. Lat part good weather "

Tuesday Oct 6th

First part fair weather with good wind from WSW steering E by S. Mid part strong winds and cloudy carrying all sail. Lat part blowing a moderate gale carrying double reefed topsails and fore sail.

Wednesday Oct 7th

First part blowing strong from SW carrying double reefed topsails steering E by S. Mid part gale increasing took in sail to close reefed main top sail Fore and main spencers and lay to ship heading SW by S. Lat part blowing heavy winds Lat 38"30 N Long 49"40 West.

Thursday Oct 8th

First part blowing a strong gale from SW. Mid part blowing hard at 10 PM the wind hauled to the W cleared off and moderate made sail stearing E by S. Latter part blowing strong the sea running bad took in sail and luffed too again so ends.

Neva in North Atlantic Ocean 1857

Friday Oct 9th

First part blowing hard from NW laying too ship heading WSW at 6 AM made sail the wind and sea gowing down. Kept ship off stearing E by S Mid part good weather carrying all sail. Latter part strong breeze Lat 38"27 Long 44"5[?]

Saturday Oct 10th-

First part of this day wind blowing strong from the W carrying double reefed topsails stearing E by S. Mid part squalls with rain. Latter part fine weather so ends

Sunday Oct 11th

First part strong winds from NW carrying all sail stearing E by S. Mid part much the same stearing ESE. Latter part light winds and plesant weather so ends. Lat 38"18 N Long 38"30 W

Monday Oct 12th

First part light winds from NW and pleasant weather. Middle part the same. Latter part wind more to the W and light 39"16 N Long 35"05 West

Tuesday Oct 13th

First part light wind from the W stearing ESE. Mid part fresh winds at 3 PM raised the Isle of [Floras?] about miles distant luffed the [paints?] stearing SW. Lat. part light baffling winds with rain. Lat 39"24 Long 32"05 West

Wednesday Oct 14th. 18

First part good breeze from N stearing SW. Mid part saw the Isle of Fayall stearing for it. Latter part about sundown came up with it took in light sails wore ship stood of(f) shore and hauled the main hard aback until 10 PM and then stood off and on all night so ends
