ABOUT THE FRASER ISLAND DEFENCE ORGANIZATION

F.I.D.O is the watchdog of Fraser Island. Its two hundred members are concerned with the wisest use of the natural resources of Fraser Island.

This booklet has been published by F.I.D.O to portray Fraser Island as it is in 1971, and with particular reference to its tourist attractions, its timber industry and its scientific interest.

F.I.D.O is not opposed to sandmining but F.I.D.O has opposed the granting of further sandmining leases UNTIL a comprehensive survey has been carried out to determine the best possible uses, in the long term, of all of Fraser Island's natural resources.

F.I.D.O would like as many people as possilbe to individually see and understand the unique qualities of Fraser Island, so that they will have a greater appreciation of the need for a comprehensive survey - to make provision for the best land use taking into account the competing demands of forestry, tourism, national parks and sand-mining.

Further copies of this booklet may be obtained at 50 cents each from:- F.I.D.O P.O. Box 67 PIALBA 4655.

WHERE IS FRASER ISLAND?

Approximately one hundred miles due north of Brisbane, Fraser Island is separated from the mainland by the relatively shallow Sandy Straits, which vary in width from three to five miles. Fraser Island forms the eastern side of Hervey Bay, sheltering the bay and the false delta of the Mary River from the prevailing strong south easterly trade winds and providing safe small boating under ideal conditions.

Fraser Island is the largest Island off the East Australian coast. It is 617 square miles in area and with the exception of Indian Head and Waddy Point is composed entirely of sand, with some hills reaching almost to 800 feet in height. Apart from being the largest sand island in the world it has Australia's most northern open ocean surfing beaches. All beaches further north are sheltered by the Great Barrier Reef.

Fraser Island is seventy-seven miles from Sandy Cape, its most northern feature, to Hooh Point in the south. Although it has a maximum width of fourteen miles its average width is less than seven miles. The open beach runs almost ninety miles along the east coast. In the lee of the island fronting Hervey Bay sheltered beaches run from over forty miles north from Moon Point. South of Moon Point the tidal wetlands provide a rich nursery for the healthy fishing industry of Hervey Bay, as well as loading points for the abundant timber harvest.

The prevailing south easterly trade winds maintain an average velocity of from ten to twelve knots and have moulded the shifting sands into ridges and valleys ex-tending southeast to northwest.

Despite the island's increasing popularity the permanent residents of Fraser Island number less than one hundres. Most permanent residents are based at the lighthouses, the timber camps and two Forestry stations, the townships of Eurong and Happy Valley and Orchid Beach tourist resort.

The magnificent sweep of Marloo Bay from Waddy Point.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

Historical records date back to 1770 when Captain James Cook in the "Endeavour" sailed its eastern coastline along what is now popularly referred to as the "Back Beach" - being the beach exposed to the full fury of the Pacific surf and winds and the beach furthest from the mainland. Cook named Indian Head, Sandy Cape and Breaksea Spit and Cook describes the past of the coast as moderately high and very barren, there being great patches of moveable sand many acres in extent through which appeared in some places the green tops of tree half buried and in others the naked trunks of such as the sand had destroyed.

Flinders was the next recorded white man to visit Fraser Island. In 1799 he sailed the "Norfolk" into Hervey Bay and named some of the western features including Triangle Cliffs, the coloured sands of Arch Cliffs and White Cliffs. In 1802 he returned along the eastern coast in the "Investigator". Flinders too commented on the fragility of Fraser Island's exposed coast and sandhills. He said, "our course at night was directed by the fires on the shore". Flinders proceeded, landed three parties at Sandy Cape near where Sandy Cape lighthouse stands. One party collected firewood, another party of six naturalists under botanist Brown studied the flora whilst Flinders befriended the aboriginals whom he considered extremely numerous and of good physique.

Although Flinders suspected Fraser Island to be an island he marked it on his maps as "The Great Sandy Peninsula". It was not until Andrew Petrie sailed his risky craft through Sandy Strait in 1842 to camp on Fraser Island, and to subsequently discover the Mary River, that it was realised that Fraser Island was in fact, an island. In 1847 Lt. Dayman, in the tiny "Asp", sailed right through Sandy Strait.

Petrie was searching for survivors of the ill-starred "Stirling Castle" which was wrecked on the Swain Reefs on the Great Barrier Reef in 1836. Although some

A TOURIST PARADISE

The main attraction of Fraser Island is its unspoiled beauty. It is an island which has barely felt the touch of civilised man and was never despoiled by primitive man. It present a refuge from the pressures of civilisation. It satisfies a need for primitive areas, for opne space recreation, fishing, relaxation and communing with nature.

The island has over forty freshwater lakes, some nearly 500 acres in area, and one 400 feet above sea level. The island absorbs the high rainfall like a huge sponge and releases it in a constant flow into the creeks, lacks and countless seepages which run across the wide beaches to the sea. Filtered by the sand and uncontaminated by clay, the crystal clear fresh water is one of the most treasured resources of Fraser Island, both for recreation and for drinking.

Coloured sands occur throughout the island along the eastern and western beaches as well as in numerous "hidden valleys" where sand blows have exposed colourful reds, oranges, whites, yellows and ochres. The most magnificent colours sands on Fraser Island, if not the world, are the Cathedrals north of the "Moheno" wreck.

For the angler there are all the thrills of fishing from the rocky headlands at Indian Head or Waddy Point, form the expansive surfing beaches (one stretches unbroken for over 60 miles) or form the quieter inlets, estuaries and bay side beaches. Regular tours are now arranged to the deep sea big game fishing grounds, and to Lady Elliot Island, a nearby Barrier Reef coral cay. Planes and charter lauches are available and there are enough fish to satisfy the most ardent angler, including Australia's "most fighting" freshwater fish, the Australian Bass which is found in some of the island's streams.

For the children, there is freshwater swimming in the creeks and lakes as well as the surf. Eli Creek near Happy Valley is a constant attraction. Sand, surf and unspoilt charm have drawn tourists to Fraser Island in an increading stream over the last decade. Orchid Beach Island Village, a beautiful Samoan-style resort, with modern appointments, impeccable service, and both reasonably priced, and luxury style accommodation has achieved international renown. Cottages are available, at Happy Valley, Yidney and Eurong to accommodate fishing parties or families bent on enjoying a restful holiday completely removed from the stress of everyday life.

survivors reached the Clarence River, the longboard landed on Fraser Island. The deprivations of the occupants of the long boat were related by Mrs. Eliza Fraser, the wife of Captain James Fraser, from whom the Island takes its name. Mrs. Fraser lived with the aboriginals and watched many of the survivors, including her husband die.

However celebrated, Mrs. Fraser's ordeal may not have been as severe as that of two survivors of the "Seabelle" which sank on Breaksea Spit in 1857. Although all had reached shore the men were murdered and the two teenage girls were disfigured by having their noses flattened and their mouths cut. They could hardly remember the English language when rescued two years later. The stories of the early history, the wrecks, and dramas of Fraser Island are legend.

In 1862, two years after Fraser Island was declared an aboriginal reserve Tom Petrie, son of Andrew, together with Pettigrew explored Fraser Island. In 1863 the first timber was cut from Fraser Island for milling at the Dundathu Mill, the timber was harvested by a timber getter "Yankee Jack" Piggott, who one year later, met a violent death at the hands of Fraser Island aboriginals. Yet the timber industry was born. For the next 60 years, until the establishment of a tourist camp at Happy Valley, which closed during the depression, it was around the timber industry and the aboriginal mission that most of the history revolved. This era has been well reported by Jules Tardent. Fraser Island sustains a regular annual harvest of 7,000,000 super feet of timber.
