House of Representatives.
Fortieth Congress, U.S.
Washington, D.C.
Clinton, Ind
April 20th, 1867.
Frederick Douglas Esq.
Dear Sir
You are doubtless aware that the 39th Congress entrusted the delicate task of handing down to future generations the face and form of the late President Mr. Lincoln to Miss Vinnie Ream a talented rising young artist of Washington. Miss Ream's friends are very anxious that she should make a bust of yourself. She having already finished fine ones of Thaddeus Stevens, Reverdy Johnson and other representative men of the Nation.
Would it be too much for me to ask you if some time when convenient for you to call at her studio in New York and give her sittings. By so doing you will confer a favor upon Miss R's many friends in and out of Congress.
