F. Douglass Esqr,
Rochester.
Dear Sir,
Unexpected and very serious matters have prevented me to answer your very kind of 18th Inst. I now, with pleasure, hasten to do so, begging you to excuse the delays, in consideration of my great amount of work, now that I am winding up all government affairs.
I thank you very much for the Journal which you sent me and which I read with great interest. I need not say how proud I am of your kind compliments which I will always endeavor to deserve.
Our friends Capt. Tate will be

very grateful when he will hear from me that you remember him: according to last advises from Hayti, he had been appointed acting administrator of the finances of Port-au-Prince; a very serious and important office.
Enclosed I have the pleasure to forward my photograph. May I request the favor of your's, which I intend to place in my collection of American celebrities?
Since some days I have got Greely, Wendel Phillipps, Lloyd Garrison, Emerson, Sumner &c. &c. I will lodge you among them, so that I may carry home to my countrymen the images of the most prominent defenders of our Cause.
Hoping to have the honor of your favors, before my departure on Friday, and with renewed assurance of respect and admiration.
I remain, Dear Sir, Your most obt. Servant
