Sat: Rome July 31 88.
On Sunday the 25th Instant. being saint James's day began the Public Reioicings here w ch lasted 3 dayes, for the Birth of the Prince of Wales. First of all, was a Capella of eighteen Cardinals who assisted at high Mass. and Te Deum perform'd, w th the choicest Music and voices att the English Church, w ch was most richly adorn'd w th Cloth of Gold-Hangings belonging to Cardinal Barberini.
His Emminence of Norfolke expresst himself very - particularly on this Occasion, having still all the Windows ~ of his Palace plentifully illuminated, w th white-wax Torches. and a fine Fountaine erected, w th the King's Arms, and ~ other Ornam ts over it, w ch was from Time to Time supply'd w th wine in the Piazza too over against him a whole Ox was ordered to be roasted and distributed, a very good ~ Consort of Trumpets and Kettle-Drum attended like wise nor wanted there any thing proper and usuall on such Occasions.

Sr. John Lytrolt his Maj of all his Appartm ts illuminated w th white wax Torches & renewed each night, and Over his Gate a large Picture in w ch was represented the Prince of Wales w th various Triumphs, Devices & Ornam ts proper for the Occasion, together w th the Pope's, King's and Queen's Pictures, the whole being adorn'd, w th Festons of silk &ca and sett all about too w th white wax Torches. among his neighbour =hood were distributed eleven-hundred Lantorns, w th the King's Arms, w ch all the 3 nights were supply'd a new w th as many Lights, and the first night, a whole Ox by his Appointm t was roasted att the end of the Street on Trinità de' Monti, over against w ch a Fountain of wine ran all the while, w ch the two following nights was removed, and sett vpp before his Gate. Dureing the whole he caused too 700 Mortaletti to be fir'd still att the Royall Healths and Salutes to his friends who came to.

to congratulat w constantly Tables spread, w th variety of choice wines, Coole-waters, and other Provisions suitable to the Company that enter'd, nine Trumpets and Kettle Drum attended also constantly in his middle Appartm t besides Suitzers and other Drums and Flutes, who went to an againe in the Street, during the whole Function.

The Ambassadr of Malta, Monsignr Caparara, the Resident of Savoy, the Agents of Bavary, Newburg, and Parma, put forth likewise Torches the like did Mr Panton, and the English Consul, as also the English, Scotch, and Irish Colleges, and each proportionably, agreat Multitude of others according to theire abilities set out Lantorns. James The Eight by the Grace of God King of Scotland, England, France & Ireland, Defender of the Faith &c. Whereas We are fully satisfyed with the duty Loyalty & affection of Our Trusty & wellbeloved Dougal Stewart of Appin, & of the many & good services performd by his Family to the Crown upon all occasions, and being also well persuaded that he himself as one of the Chiefs of the Clans wants only agood opportunity to exert himself, as his Predecessors have done, at the head of his Clan & Following, for the recovery & in the defence of Our Just Rights, & for the releiving of his Native Country from the present Tyranny & Usurpation it groans under, We are resolved to Conferr on him the Tittle & Dignity aftermentiond, as an encourage= =ment to him & an obligation on his heirs to continue firmly attatched to their Rightful & Lawful Soveraigns, & to Support upon all occasions to the utmost of their power the intrest of the Crown. Our will & pleasure Therefore is, and We hereby Ordain Letters Patent to pass under Our Great Seal of Our Ancient Kingdom of Scotland, Making & Creating, as We hereby Make & Create the said Dougal Stewart of Appin a Lord & Peer of Parliament of our said ancient Kingdom, by the name

name & Title of Lord Appin To Have & to hold to [him & his ?] with all the privileges [p? ?], precedencies, places, immunities & other advantages, which by the Laws & Customs of Our said ancient Kingdom do appertain, in as full & ample manner as any other Lord of Our said Kingdom does hold the same. Which Letters Patent are likewise to contain all such clauses as are necessary for making the same valid & effectual And We hereby Dispence with all [requirements,] if any be herein containd, And Ordain Our said Letters Patent to pass Our Great Seal of Our said Ancient Kingdom of Scotland per saltum without passing any other Register or Seal, For doing whereof this shall be a sufficient Warrant. Given at Our Court at Albano this sixth day of June 1743, In the 42 year of Our Reigne. JR
