Harwich the 17th of Ianuary yesterday sailed hence the Vine pacquett Boat with a mail for Holland and 60 recruits on board for fflanders but she was no sooner at sea but sprung a Leack so that she was fforced to return the same day into harbour and is brought upon the Careen to be mended in the mean time the Grayhound ffrigatt is to supply her - place as pacquett Boat to & from from Holland

The following oath is subioined to the Bill brought in yesterday by the Lord Devonshire for securing their Maiesties persons and Government vezt. I. A: B: do swear that I will be faithfull and beare True Allegiance to our Sovereign Lord and Lady King William and Queen Mary and that I do not hold myself in any manner, obliged by my former Oath or Allegiance to the Late King Iames and I do swear that I will not Aid or Assist or hold Correspondence with the said King. Iames in case he should attempt to recover his pretended right to the Crown of this Realm by Invading the Realm or otherwise but will to the utmost of my power Assist & defend their Maiesties king William and Queen Mary their Crowns and Government against all the enemies particularly against the Late King James & his Adherents

The house of Commons yesterday sent a Message to the Lords for a Conference upon their Throwing out their Lordshipps Clause made in the Supply Bill and their Lordshipps appointed 4 in the After noon when the Managers delivered their reasons in the painted Chamber vez that It was their Inherent Right to Levy Money upon the subiect and ordered all things relating thereto which if the Commons continue to affirm and the Lords to adhere to their ffirst Resolucions

whether they should referr the matter to a Committee and Carryed it in the Negative by 14 they Locked up the doors of the house and tis likely they will sett Late

- the Lords yesterday reassumed the debate of calling the Attorney Generall to their Assistance and appointed a Committee to search precedents in the Case but a noble peer said that though it had been practised in former time yet he could not tell whether the king did it ex gratia they had power to summon his Attendance and Moreover belie ved it was done when he was no member of the house of Commons as he now is and that there is a precedent in the Like Case upon which tis thought the matter will drop

Yesterday the Envoy from the - Elector of Bavaria had audience of their - Maiestys to signify to them the death of the - Electres at vienna upon which the Court is ordered to go into mourning on Sunday

Yesterday the King came to the house of Lords & gave his Royall Assent to the Grand-supply-bill & that of the Provence of York with 8 private ones -

I heare Admirall Russell had been at Court praying to be excused from goingthis sumer to sea which if he will not under= =take there wilbe a Comission of 3 - a nobleman to be Cheif of them

Yesterday being the tyme prefixed in the Kings Proclamacion for the seamen to surrender them selves on board the great ships they were flocking to Chatham & Tallys - are struck for 300000li to pay off the ships as fast as they can come into the Nore

The House. of Commons upon [Compl...t] of a little book published which styles the king Conqueror- ordered that Baldwin the publisher - be summoned to attend & Edward Bolum the - Licenser be taken into Custody & Baldwin - being come was examined by the house & signifyed the whole matter that it was brought him by one

the debate of the Conquering book & called in Mr. Benbly the stacioner to know how he came by the Copy who said he had it from Stamford Carryer but being very much pressed in the - matter declared he had it from Mr. Blunt who is a very honest gentleman but Sir Thomas Pope Blunt is desired to give him a lettre to attend the house - Mr. Bohun the licenser was afterward called & asked how he came to Lyencse such a book who replyed he gaue it the title Conquerors to sell the better - after 4 hours debate the house ordered it to be burnt by the Common hangman

Bently - who was ordered to be seized - the said - Book was debated in Councell as also by the house of Peers & wilbe burnt by the Comon hangman

Yesterday the King after he had signed the aforemencioned bills went & dined with the Earl. of Devonshire at Grafton-house

The Earl. of Banbury had by habeus: Corpus: removed his Indictment into the Court of - K. being where his Lordship wilbe tryed this approaching terme -

Edenbrough January the 14o nevell Paine - who had been a long tyme prisoner in this King.dome designing yesterday to make his escape & a soldier understanding it gave notice thereof upon which the said Paine & an Officer who Complotted ~ with him are Confined to a Dungeon - we have - advice that a Dutch Caper in his la way lately towards Leith met a ffrench ship laden with provisions~ for the Bass & with the Caper tooke & brought into - Leith road-

Falmouth 16o instant a Collyer being - taken by a ffrench. privateer & coming about the - Lands end foundred but the men got ashoare in their Long boate & are brought hither prisoners

By the Garland frigot & some other ships come into the Downes the Lords of the - Admiralty had yesterday advice that the Sweeds & Danes are lading 150 saile of ships with Navall stores for France upon which their Lordships haue ordered the Chatham Larke & other frigots to saile & intercept them

- Divers other books & papers besides that aforesaid of a pernicious tendancy besides that aforesaid were mencioned in the house of Commons that had the Imprimatur to them & spake against the Bishop of Sarum's Pastorall Letter Dr Sherlocks disus distinction upon the Oath but had they not given a check to their debates they would have let them selves into more business then they could have gone through so the latter last matter fell - This day the House. of Comons after reading some private bills whe went upon

46 saile of stout English Men. of war are - now Ready to saile on any occasion

The East. India Company are sending to India ships factors soldiers &c as if there - were no bill in Parliament against them & have - ordered the goods on board the Kempthorne to be - exposed to publick sale on tuesday next -

On thursday night the sessions - ended at the Old Baily where two Malefactors - received sentence of death among whom 6 highwaymen (vizt) Whitney - Poore - Phillips - [.eeland] - ffetherstone - & Legros - & another for Clipping the rest were women among whom one Mris Meryweather for dispersing the late King. Iames declaracions - mr Holland & another notorious highwayman - condemned the last sessions before - were brought downe & ordered to be executed among the rest - - 11 were burnt in the hand & 8 escaped it by - going to serve their Maiestys in fflanders - [...] & Stafford 2 other highwaymen were acquited - of the robbery with Whitney but are ordered to be carryed to Kent & [Berks] assizes to be tryed there -

My last left the ^Lords last sitting upon the Clause to the supply-bill & they came to a - resolucion by 16 voices to withdraw the said Clause& accordingly their Lordships yesterday sent a Messenger to desire a Conference with the Comons & told - them that tho' it was their right to appoint their owne assessors to tax their personall estates yet considering the importance of the occasion they would not insist upon their Clause -

The bill aforemencioned for the Province of Yorke impowers the Inhabitants to dispose of their - estates by will notwithstanding any former law or Custome to the Contrary - yesterday the Comons - read a 3d time & passed the Million-bill ordering it to be sent up to the Lords & have fixed aRider with borrowing & appropriating Clauses the last of which was 500000li to be appropriated to theuse of the Navy - I am now told that there is an Embargo laid on all marchant ships -

& that his Majesty be moved to displace Mr Bohun - the house then debated the Bishopp of Sarums Pastorall Lettre & some wold have have it burnt also but the debate was adiourned - the Lords sent to the house the bill for a - trienniall Parliament & did nothing but heare a private case

London Ianuary 24th 1692

on sunday morning about 3 a Clock 6 men broke open the house of the Late Lord Dartmouth on Blackheath bound and gagged all the servants and Carryed away to the value of 1500li in plate Iewells, Rings, Gold Watches, small armes & the poate and the Arms had his Lordshipps Coat of Armes engraven thereon a further account: will be given in the next Thursdayes Gazett

on Saturday night [14o Lamb] the Goldsmith in Lumbard street was sett upon in his Coach near Acton by 5 highwaymen 2 of whom he shott dead with his Blunderbuss and Mortally wounded a 3d himself being wounded in the hand and Arm one of the highwaymen Lyes dead on the place the other they remounted and Carryed off tis said that one of them and his horse are both known whereby tis believed a discovery of the rest will be made.

Portsmouth 22d. Ianuary yesterday were shipped off from hence above 300 ffrom a prisoner of warr for st Maloes the same day came in here the Isabella having on board Captain George Matthewes whose ship was taken by the ffrench and Carryed into Thoulon where he saith there will be Launched for this sum mers expedicion a ship 24 ffoot longe = then was the Royall Sun - a Gentleman Lately come from Brest also reports that the french ffleet there are ready to put to Sea.

Is come down to Newgate for the executing Whitney and the other highway Men but by reason the hangman is to burn the Conquering book and the Bishop of Salsburyes Letter to Morrow they are not to be executed till ffriday = the Lords this day also ordered the Conquering - book to be burned and made the following vote that the Aspersion of King - William and Queen Mary being King and Queen by Conquest

on Saturday last 200000li was sent to portsmouth for the use of that Garison

on Thursday Last the Earl of Danby - Captain Mitchell - and Captain Mason were appointed by the King to haue each a fflagg ship In next summers expedicion

The King hath sent Collonell Tallbott Enginier Generall of Ireland to visit all the ffortificacions in the Western Coast of England viz the Cittadells of plymouth - St Manese - and Penden nis Castle by which we believe some new works will be added to them

The Dutch ffactors continue to buy up Corn In all our Counties

on Sunday Last a great Councell was held at Kensington where the 3 persons

Entituled Gods Wayes of disposing Kingdomes and debated the burning of that also and Considering that the people might think they had a peak against the Bishops Carryed it in the Negative - the Duke of Gloucester is taken sick and tis believed the Malady will turn to the small pox - this day the Earl of Banbury came to the kings Bench and put in his Claims as a peer and the Court has ordered the Attorney Generall - to come in and be heard what he can say against him = the dead Warrant

aforemencioned were appointed in the place of Admirall to Command the ffleet next Sum mer And they are to be on board the Britannia

By some passengers arrived Lately from Holland It is Aduised that the Dutch haue not yet sealed the state of warr for this year and that they want 25000 men for their Quota which they are to haue in the ffield this summer In the Low Countreys pursuant to his Maiesties order

His Maiestie is resolved to go for Holland the Latter end of ffebruary or the beginning of March at the ffurthest

Yesterday Mr Woolverston an Eminent Attorney died suddenly of an Apoplexy at a stationers ship in the Temple

We hear that the ffrench haue laid an Embargo on all theire shipps some Inferring from thence that his Most Christian Maiestie is dead, others that tis in order to make a descent upon us and all Conclude that they haue somewhat to perform that they would not haue the world penetrate Into.

Letters since my Last from Dublin Advise that kingdom is in a full posture of defence the Militia being well disciplined and shew a ready disposicion of making a vigorous defence in Case the ffrench should make a descent there that Corn is scarce But But fish wonderfull plenty - They add that the Lord Livetenant will not come for England as was Expected

That Parliament being to sitt the 6th of April that 29 Rapparies haue been Lately executed = Here is an account: that the providence pacquett Boat ffeared to be Cast away was driven into Norway where she is in safety with most of her passengers = yesterday the houses of Commons after having voted the Bishop of Salisburyes pastorale Letter to be burnt by the Common Hangman Went upon a Book wrott by the Bishop of st Asaph

is highly Iniurious to their Maiesties and Inconsistent with the principles on which this Government is ffounded & tends to the subversion of the Rights of the people = the house of Commons haue been all this day in a Grand Committee upon the Bill to lay a further Impost upon divers Commodities and Went through the same and haue ordered it to be reported to morrow and afterwards will go upon wayes and Meanes further to supply the kingdome = on saturday last ffive high way men robbed 3 Gentlemen in sight of Tyburn of 400li value & threatned to burn the Gallowes before Whitney & the rest come to be Executed
