A booke of medicines. With other medical receipts, and a number of cookery receipts by Joan Gibson and by a second Joanna Gibson.

On the first leaf 'John Gibson 1634. A booke of Medicines', below this 'Joanne Gibson. Ars longa, vita brevis. 1669', and under this 'Joanna Gibson 1708'. On the verso of the last leaf 'Liber Joannis Gibsoni Anno Domini 1632', and inside the lower cover 'Pretium 1s'.

The last entry, by Joanna Gibson, is dated 1717.

ffor the winde Collicke

Take the leaues of Radises and chop them somewhat great, and frie them with sallet oyle or fresh butter, till they be browne, and then applye it hot to the place where your paine is.

A nother for the same. Take oates and frie them in a lettle viniger, and put them in a little bagge, and then applye it hot to the place where your paine is./

ffor the Bluddie flix

Take Garlicke and rost it, and then take the pap that comes forth of it and spred it vpon a peece of peece of leather, and apply it ^hott to the Navill.

Or.

To drinke aquavitie and runninge water is very good.

ffor one that is thicke of hearinge Take a cloue of garlicke, and prick it full of holes, and steepe it a day in vinigar, and then drawe a peece of silke thorwe it and soe put it into your eare, and there lett it dissolue, and then pull out the Slime./

For to cause easy passage in the yeard, when one is troubled with the stone. Take the oyle of Scorpions and apply it to the oute side of the yeard where the stone stayeth, and it will cause it to evacuate presently.

ffor a Consumption. Let them first take 5 ? of Br? and sweate upon, it and if they be fainte let them take a spoonfull of this?Cordiall and eate nothinge but broth and drinke six-shillings beare with a ?

The Cordiall Take a pinte of Stroberye water, and halfe a pinte of Blacke cherrie? water, two ounces of syrupe of violetts and two ounces of syrupe of Gilliflowers, two ounces of the syrupe of Poppie, mingle them all together in a glass, and take euerye two houres a spoonfull.
