Hon. Mayor and City Council.

Gentlemen-

We, your Water Works Committee, referring to the attached resolution of Alderman Orr, regarding the hauling of coal to the Water Works and Electric Light Station, beg to report that after investigation we do not think it advisable to change the hauling of the coal at the present time and recommend that the arrangement now in force be continued till the end of this fiscal year.

Respectfully Submitted,

Fort Worth, Texas. Jany.1.1898.

Hon. Mayor and City Council. Gentlemen;- I beg to submit herewith a franancial statement of the Water Works Department for a period of nine months., from April 1, 1897, to DEC.31.1897.

The Gross Earnings for the period were $61.845.25 and the operating expenses and Bonded Interest are 54.965.81 leaving the Net Earnings for the nine months $6.877.44

The prolonged drought, causing a scarcity of water during the past summer has greatly increased the operating expenses of this department, by having to operate the Old Water Works Plant.

The Superintendent has had to operate the Old Plant a great portion of the last five months, which greatly increases the expenses, particularly the items of fuel, Pump House Repairs and Pump House Extra Labor.

The average cost of fuel for the April quarter of this year was $308.08 per month, while the average cost for the past six months during which the Old Plant was operated about or more than one half the time, was $738.09 (^per months) which shows the great saving in fuel of the New over the Old Plant.

The water receipts show an increase over the two previous quarters, notwithstanding this is usually the hardest quarter of the year, being winter time and little water being use. and had we a "visible supply of clear water" i am confident our list of water consumers would soon more than double itself.

Thanking your Hon. Body for courtesies extended I am, Your obedient servent. "HJ Calhoun" Secretary Water Works.
