November 26th: 1898:

J.F. Henderson: Mayor Pro Tem-

Dear Sir:

Col Abe Harris at the head of our Confederate Relief Committee, also one of the Managers of our late effort to obtain relief for the Poor of Lee Camp by the lecture of Dr Houser at the City Hall, calls my attention to the slim outcome from the generous effort of Dr Houser, a Northern man, to aid us in our unceasing efforts to relieve indigent Confederates, has consulted me as to the proriety of asking the City to donate the use of the Hall to that lecture. I know that the proposition to throw off one half of the usual cost and make the charge only $5.00 quite considerate in our friends of the city force, but would it be asking too much of the city to let us have it free of charge? It is this, as a business proposition- if we do not as confederate make these efforts we will be compelled to ask the coty to render much more assistance than we are asking now. We will be encouraged to go on and work at relief, by our present mode if we can meet such assistance as we ask in this case. So if you feel authorised to say we can have it free of cost let Col Harris report this to the camp at its usual sabbeth eve meeting tomorrow- if you should desire to wait the action of the council, Col Harris can defer his report till you can do so-With thanks for the past I remain yours truly

CC Cummings
