had a great deal of diphtheria and scarlet fever here this winter, but we all have escaped so far, for which I am thankful. I have had company all day. I am talked most to death. I was glad to get so long a letter and hope you will write as long an ans. or longer the next time; do answer all my questions. I have writin twice to Miss Rock, but she did not reply. Can you tell me why? She did not get that dreadful disease did she? Or is Mrs. Lindley careless about the mail? I should be sorry indeed if anything has happened to her. She seemed in such good spirits the last letter I received from her. I don't believe it would surprise me if you would tell me that Mama Slack was gone

to that word without end, and Dr. Shields was worried. Such work to be the result of high flown teaching. Yes, I recieved my usual amount of Christmas presents. It seemed to be the saddest Christmas I ever spent. My heart almost refused to be glad. Others had so much sorrow that it seemed wicked to, (ufaid?), in our own happiness.
