Dear Sister Edith:

I received your very interesting letter, also the postal order for $20. All o.k., which makes $50. of the $80, as you thought, [ ?] many thanks for it. Edith, I asked my contractor about some of the prices or material for building. He said we never get any Oregon Pine here. All of the flooring in my house is Georgia pine which cost $24.00 pr. thousand & for siding, White wood is used nearly all together now which cost $28.00 per thousand. Carpenters get 40 cents an hour & work 8 hours for a day's work which is their union

price. Here in the East, all good houses are covered, first with matched sheeting, $20.00 per thousand, then covered with tar or rosen paper. Then they put on lapped siding. So you see, that makes a good warm house. The contractor figured on 70 days on any house, but he had a lot of men working for him &, out of that time, I guess, there was wks. that there was not anything done on the house at all. He is building his 16th house for this summer & has turned down lots of work, as he had more than he could do. I had all my floors scraped downstairs, (but kitchen & that I covered with linolium,) & the hall upstairs & two front bedrooms, a boarder of 2 ft. all around the

rooms & then I oiled & schlacked them myself. The scraping cost 15 cents a sq. yd. The bathroom, we covered with linolium. We use natural gas for lighting & cooking & for everything, but the furnace, & that we haven't got in yet. But we are going to burn coal in that $2.75 pr ton & Chas. is going to put that in for me, as that is a part of his trade, & he can save me money on it. The natural gas is nice in the grate these cold nights & mornings. The weather here has been quite cold for several days & have had 3 frosts. The people here are all wearing their winter

overcoats & furs. It makes the cold chills run over me to think of winter here again, but I guess we will have to grin & bear it again. Edith, if you want, I will send you all the dimensions of our house etc. Edith, be on the look out for an express package which Johnie is going to send you today, a little wedding gift from several of us & am sorry we couldn't of done better but, never the less, you have all of our better wishes & hope you both enjoy what little we have sent. Sarah said to tell you that she would of made up the napkins if she had the time, but as she didn't, would let you do it, as you might want to do it a little diferent than she would

Edith, the underware you spoke about, Johnie said that he couldn't get now, as that was a great bargain at that time. You know now is the dearest time for anything in that line. What do you want such heavy underware in Cal.? I thought everybody wore summer clothing out there the year round. Yesterday, was my day off & we took Charley downtown & got him an overcoat, cap, & under drawers & shirts & he is as happy as a lord with them & is talking about Santa Claus already. We got him a 5 year size overcoat & it just fits him nice now. He is a fine boy & is the whole life of the
