Ft Kamehameha Feb. 14, 1922

Dear friend Alice:

Do you know your letter made me feel very homesick when you spoke about the snow and pretty, [suniery?], in the mountains. Of course, we have mountains here, just off to the north as the mountains at Arcadia, but not near so high and pretty and never have snow on the tops. The only one having snow on its top is Mount Kea on the island of Hawaii and can be seen only on clear days from our camp, [[inserted above]:on Hawaii]], as the top is often above the clouds

Most of the boys in both Balloon Campanies are getting about the same as you girls were when the principal told you that you would be dismissed as some of the boys will get discharged within the next two months, and I am sure it will feel good to get out after being tied up for three years.

Last Sun., the Y.M.C.A. gave a program of music and the civilians were invited to come. The idea is to get the soldiers and civilians cloter, [closer], together. It is time that some civilians don't like the soldiers and the Y., [YMCA] is serving as an open door to bring them cloter, [closer], together. A lady who I was talking to came over on the, [Maui?], from S.F. [San Francisco]. Said the sea was very rough. That the woman, [women], had to be tied in their beds. Everybody on the boat thought sure it was going down and never would reach Honolulu.

For the present, it has been rather cool. Comming, [Coming], back from Honolulu last night on the train, it was to, [too], cool to keep the windows open. The boys are all hoping that it will soon become warmer.

(Some blot) I would very much liked to have taken that trip in the mountains and messed around in the snow. Ice skating is my favorily, [favorite], winter sport. Would rather skate than do anything else.

I have sure taken a many a hit from somebody throwing snowballs. At school, we used to choose up sides and then each side would build a fort and which side held out the longest won the day.

It seems rather out-of-order to be a school boy again, but I really enjoy to go and am sure it isn't doing me any harm to learn something. We have a very good instructor, and he takes pride in his studens, [students], which is very hard to find in the Army, an instructor, [[struck text]: or takes instructor]], who takes pride in the men.

Must close for this evening.

Carl
