Aug 2 1878 Dear Edith: I enclose a sample of the insulting letters I have been receiving from our mother. I do not intend to answer it or write her any more letters. I know just how she is, and she could come home if she choose and I would go after her, but I believe she is merely carrying out plans made before she left. If she was really sick, that is bad. I would spend my last cent on her, but as it is she could be home, and I would manage to get the work done; as I have before. We all feel as though we would like to do nothing but rest sometimes, I suppose, but thank fortune we are not all so selfish.
