Hemet, Calif. Oct. 19, 1939

Dear Edith and George: I have been thinking of writing to you for some time but didn't get it done.

The latter part of August I think it was, Daddy fell and hurt his arm and hand. Since then, he has spent his time between his bed and chair which he manages to get to with Mama pulling and lifting him. Of course, he hasn't been outside at all and Mama has tried to do the irrigating of the lawn, flowers and trees as well as do her work, go to the store, and do the business.

In July, one of the tenants moved out upstairs and about Sept. 1st, the other upstairs tenant moved out and so 2 flats are empty and each one had to have things done to them. One flat, the floors were in bad shape and had to be fixed, also new shades etc.

Mama is about distracted with all her troubles, the heat etc.

Lee and I went down the last week of Sept., right after the heat wave and took them a lot of eats. We mowed the lawn, cleared the driveway, trimmed some trees etc. Lee tore down the outside toilet which they had wanted down for some time and gathered it and other old lumber and boxes up and brought a big load home.

in a trailer which we borrowed. There was so much old lumber and stuff there we couldn't take it all. So got the man who got our public garage there to get it for his fireplace in the office.

We went down on Thursday and came back on Friday.

I have been trying to get some house cleaning done, but did myself up last week and was all in by Sunday. Am feeling better now and am painting the kitchen. It is such a big kitchen and is a big job.

Lee has been working in his walnuts and this week putting up a fence around the orchard so he can turn the horses and cow out to pasture in his green barley which he sowed some time ago.

We had a letter in Frances today. She is very busy. She is the school pianist this year. She plays for the choirs, chapel, solos, duets, and all the music.

Graydon is very busy at the news. He worked last night till 1 o'clock as one of the men was away.

Hope you and George are well, also the girls and their families.

Our summer wasn't as hot as usual as the thermometer didn't go higher than 110, [degree symbol], in the shade this year.

Must close now and go to bed.

With love, Alma.
