Contains an alphabetical "Catalogue of Plants from Doctors Linnous [sic] and Hill," referring to Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778) and Sir John Hill (1714?-1775), as well as Manasseh Cutler's descriptions of plants in 1783, numbered 100-140, including Indian cucumber (Medeola), pigeon berry (possibly Rivina humilis), and yellow water lily (Nuphar lutea). There is an index to plants described in the front of the volume.

67 fibres — The stalk rises from ye root, surrounded on ye surface of ye ground with a large no. of smooth oblong leaves, 5 or 6 inch long & 1 1/2 broad very narrow near their ungues — considerably thick.

The stalk round nearly as large on ye little fingure at root, tapering, having a great number of very short small white hairs — It rises with out leaf for branch 18 or 20 inches, when it throws of a Number of alternate flower stalks, near a? & nearer together as it ap= proaches ye apex. These flower stalks [thro^?] of short pedicles on wh stand ye flowers, wh form a kind of open spike — of a redish appearance as ye corol. & Anthera before ya discharge are of a pale red colour.

It grows very common in our meadows — mostly coldish wet meadows — & sides of ditches —

Corol — Tubular or cylindrical — ringent, lower segement — lip divided into 3 segments bright yellow

Stam 4 filaments filiform of an equal length hid under ye upper lip — Anth — oblong — & seem to adhere together & to ye Corol — perhaps from ye glutinous juice of ye plant —

Pistil — filiform Style longer yn filament Stigma small — Leaves, stalk & spike like Hills Betonica.

Seeds — A Capsule with 2 loculuments containing numerous ovate seeds

Root — not exam Consist of a number of larg white, tapering, branched fibres.

I doubt whether it belongs to Class Didynam. Vide Withering — does not agree. Credo — N.B. 2 of ye filament are much shorter yn ye other 2 as ye wdith of ye antherae.

Pistil — Germ. Globose or rather ovate. Very short Style no Style, Stigma on ye apex of ye germen & obtuse.

70 & fibrated, with circular caveties at each joint, brearing some resembl of a Seal —

Stalks round, green, slender firm, reclinging, thick set with oblong nervose leaves 5 inch long 3 broad, alternate, stalk 18 or 20 inch high.

The flowers are numerous & stand along ye end of ye stalks above ye leaves on short branched pedicles forming a long loose interrupted spike of a yellowish white colour. Plants sides of ledges & in rich woodlands.

Calix — Perianth — below Germain divided into 3 ovate, long, accumit leaves patent leaves —

Corol. 3, ovate, accuminated, long & narrow, reflex petals white with green veins, inserted into ye cup between ye leave of calix

Pistil — Germen globose, acuminated wiht 6 very acute angles. The filaments rise in ye sinuses of these angles — Styles 3 subulated refex bent out wards — Stigma — oblong, reflex

Seeds in a Capsule of 6 loculaments Numerous ovate or Globular —

Root, Bulbous, dark colour — Leaves — no radical leaves — Stalk — round lightly striated — rise 12 or 14 inch — erect, redish — At ye top stands 3, (rhomboidal) or 4 Square leaves, 2 of ym acute & 2 side angles very obtuse — acuminated at apex — [drawing] Short pedicles sent off from ye same center. 4 1/2 inch long 3 broad with [A cup?] on uper & promonent lower — large branched anatomized ribs margen smoth — stand a little spreading, margen nearlly touching & even —
