Contains an alphabetical "Catalogue of Plants from Doctors Linnous [sic] and Hill," referring to Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778) and Sir John Hill (1714?-1775), as well as Manasseh Cutler's descriptions of plants in 1783, numbered 100-140, including Indian cucumber (Medeola), pigeon berry (possibly Rivina humilis), and yellow water lily (Nuphar lutea). There is an index to plants described in the front of the volume.

72 leaves, is sent o fye pedicle of ye flower, round, smoth 1 inch long & bent down between ye leaves, paral to ye stalk, ye disk of ye lower toward ye ground, & but one flower on a stalk — This is a very curious vegetable — grow plentifully in rich wood land — found it in John Woodberis ground — Not common —

Yellow Flowr from farm (wild Sun flower)

Calisc — permanet, perianth, divided into 3 deep, ovate segments, concave hairy segments, slightly tinged with red, 2 of ym having adhering to ye margen, at ye botom of ye sinus a very small accuminated leaf.

Corol — 5-inversely Cordate patent petals — apex serated — a very bright yellow. The petal is almost triangular — apex nearly square disks of ye flower 1 1/2 inches wide [drawing] size & shape

73 The ungus of ye peatal very small inserted into ye receptical.

Stam — Numerous, very long, thread shaped filaments inserted in to ye receptical below ye germen — The filaments lay flat on un all lay flat on ye petals most of colected into 2 or 3 bunches — ye most them lay together, in one direction as tho. they were blown together, by a persons blowing with his mouth on ye disk of ye flower — ye filaments being turned round ye germen so as to lay parallel in one direction — beside ye large cluset 2 or 3 smaller in different directions Anthera orbicular or rather oblong — but short — they do not adhere though they lay close to each other.

Pistil — Germen ovate capsule stands above ye corol. Style cylindrical, erect short, Stigma may very large, Capitated, spread —

Seed — numerous very small contained in a Capsule

Root, fibrous, divaniated, Stalk small, firm, redish 5, or 6 inch high — Leaves lanceolated, small stand alternate — The stalk terminates in a yellow flower 1 1/2 inch diam. Grows

Calix — None The common Perianth (one Berry) Mr. Fuller.

Corol — a common Perianth Corol — (to ye small florets) consistng of 4 large oval white leaves petals with very short pedicles — standing cruciform. petals pointed at apices

From ye common recepitcal rises 4 clusters of very small florets with a single one in ye center, each of these florets stand on pedicles, & are believe tubular The florets are cylindrical tubes

Flour clusters of small tubular cylindrical florets rise from ye ungues of these petals on short pedicles, with a single floret in ye center of ye common receptical all even at their margin, making ye disk of ye florets even.

Single Florets — very small cylindrical tube Germena, which I take to be ye seeds or fruit — at ye on ye apex of ye germen wh is blunt or flat, are 4

75 4 exceeding small reflected dividing petals —

Stam, 4 subulated, spreading long, filaments rising between ye ungues of ye corroli[?] or rather within. anthera, oblong stand horizontally within ye filaments inserted in ye middle.

Pistil — Style — one, cylindrical, sorter than ye filaments — Stigma, simple & small —

Seeds cylindrical some naked & one to each floret —

Root — divaricated, fibrous, (credo)

Stalk — rises 3 or 4 inches high — quadrangular, smoth jointe has one or 2 pair of opposite small ob oval leaves — Just below ye flower stand 2 oposite leaves, from ye ala of these lives rise 2 oposite leaves all on short pedicles, oval nervose accumi= =nated at apex — 1/2 inch long 1 inch broad. These leaves stand spreading & have a stellate appearance of 6 raises — having 6 leaves — There are some times two set of these leaves — or only 3 leaves on one side of ye pedicle of ye flower above ye star — The pedicle of ye flower

This is a very curious beautiful plant. The flower is of a milk white — Grows frequent in wood land & sides of hedges & near swamps —

It must belong to Tetrand — Monogyn — & first Division —

June 67th — No. 123 — Small purple flower. in field & seems to be a kind of not grass.

Calix — Perianth divided in 5 long strap-shaped, patent, hairy petals leaves — parminant

Corol — 5 oblong, blunt, concave patent, petals, of a bright purple deciduous

Stam — 10 filiform erect filaments anthera, small globular —

Pistil — Germen oblong, Style — none Stigma on open Germ — befor trifed — or 3 Styles on stigmas reverted —

Seeds — Capsule, containing Numerous small
