Contains an alphabetical "Catalogue of Plants from Doctors Linnous [sic] and Hill," referring to Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778) and Sir John Hill (1714?-1775), as well as Manasseh Cutler's descriptions of plants in 1783, numbered 100-140, including Indian cucumber (Medeola), pigeon berry (possibly Rivina humilis), and yellow water lily (Nuphar lutea). There is an index to plants described in the front of the volume.

82 smaller twigs — The leaves stand generally opposit, & out of ye ala send out other leave brances # — but the leaves to not allways stand regular. The top of ye small twigs terminate in flower stalk wh send of many branchs, & shorter pedicles on which stand many small flowers — The flowers stand very close togeth & form an even umbell — only by ye flower — pedicles do not all rise from ye same center, & yr is no appearance of an involucrum. The diameter of ye disk of some of ye umbells is 3 or 4 inches. And are formed & look much like ye clusters of elder flowers. Piggons Pidgeons & other birds are fond of these berries. The Bushes grow in large bunches & some times spread over many roods of ground on mudy banks of rivers & in wet swamps — It delights in wet ground & seems to be of ye tribe of willows —

Calyx. 3 orbicular, concave green leaves, with a tinge of yellow at their apecies

Corol 3 bright yellow, obicular, concave petals — remainder well described by Hill — Anthera filaments all reflected — Anthera small

June 9th No. 129 — Saracena, Polyand Monogy

Calyx — Double perianth — The lower 3 small, oval, leaves — The upper 5 large suboval leaves, both an of a very dark crimson colour.

Corol — 5 of an oval figure Petals contracted

84 contracted in ye midle by means of pentagular, [lypeated?] Stigma & forming ye petal of a double oval figure or into 2 distinct ovals — Or may be thus discribed — long oval ungues, 5 oval petals, con= tracted above where ye petals turn over ye ungues Stigma — ye ungues below oblong & 1 leaf above of on an oval figure — of a beautiful crimson colour — covering ye Stam. & bent inward on ye Stigma.

Stam — filaments numerous filiform erect — Anthera, oblong, depressed horizontal, filaments inserted into ye center of ye sides of ye Anth —

Pistil. Germen roundish, style cylindric= =cal, & short. The stigma, parminent, it is lypeated, peltate, pentagular, & covers ye stamina — 5 ribs are sent off from ye apex of ye style along ye pelta-to each corner — where they are prom turned down — extend beyound ye pentagular leaf — & pendent — here they have ye appearance of 5 distinct cylindrical Stigma, which are pendent Or The

85 The 5 ribs wh are sent a long ye leafy stigma from ye center to each angle, extend be yound the leafy substance & are pendent.

Seeds — Capsule — Agreeable to Hill —

Root — from the head of ye root are sent off are large number of hard brown slender fibres spreading every way. f From ye head rises 5 or 6 leaves imbrasing one a= =nother with their pedicles — A No. of these bunches grow in a compact cluster, & from ye center of each Leaves head rises a flower stalk. The leaves are of a very odd & curious form — a little above their ungues they become Tubular, swelling as they rise, but some what contracted 2/3 of ye way to ye apex, where they gradually contract, some what resembling cone — The diameter of some in ye gibbose part 1 1/2 inch & 3 1/2 from ye rim to ye bottom of ye tube. The leaves stand patent & on ye upper side is a foliatious, oblong

86 oblong appendage which extends from ye pedicle ot ye mergin of ye Cup — erect 1 inch wide 3 1/2 long — The mergin is circular, on ye under side of ye mergin is a nother foliatious appendage or continua. of ye leaf, extending 2/3ds round ye mergin & moveable inside hairy. The other part of ye mergen & this appendage hath a rim upon their mergin much like that of ye rim of a tin vessel — The flat leaves mentioned by Hill I have never seen.

The stalks are round smooth naked about a foot high. On ye top stands a single flower, with ye disk turned toward ye ground — more than 2 inch in diam — And of a globlular appearance.

This is a most curious & beautiful flower
