Squamis — ragged at ye edge segments deep & acuminated. border ciliated (or thick set with long hairs.

Corol. Linn. & With. Nectarium Do. Stam. from 8 to 14 or 16 (from 8-to 30-(1789) — Lin &c Anth. Do. { after ye polen is shed { found ye No. Stam. genl Female { 8 that were partly Catkin Lin & W. { dried — ye others fallen off.

Squam. as ye male. Nect. as ye male Corol. Lin &c. Nect. Linn Pistil — Germen. ovato acuminated Stile. ? opposite grows Scarcely visible. Stigma from 4 to 8 clefts.

Perc. Capsule ovate with 2 longitudinal groves — two cells 2 Valves — valves reflected. Seeds many — furnished with hair-like feathers

Species — 1787. May 4th ye Blossoms too far advand to be certain about them — but think ye above just — Specm

Apl. 4th 1789. Male blossom exact with Linn &c except ye Anth. from 8 to 30 — wh is a specific character — Vide p. 134

Male — Calix — Ament. Lin. & W. Squam. Do. Indivisual Calix none — Corol — none — Stam. four; filiform, short, erect. Anthera very large, double — lobes cloven. Female. Calix as ye Male Corol. — none. Pist. Germ subordinate (Credo) Stile one — filiform, at ye base obsd erect. Stigma bifid, simple, rather long. The Stile very distinct — & ye Stigma exactly defined where it rises from ye stile. But observed at ye base of ye Stile a n sub ovate body — perhaps ye Germen — but ye blossom was not sufficiently to determine with certainty — Conclude ye other parts correspond with Lin & W. but wish to examine further.

Frutification disposed in a an ovato-oblong spike. Individuals round; opening at ye base with many valves connected at ye top, which is flat and target shaped.
