June 24th — (3 Class. monog.) Schoenus nigricans nearest — tho^ it differs very considerably. —
Calix — Under each flower are, & two close to it, adhering round the receptacle are two husky leaves — ovate — (with broad base on extending over ye base of ye other) & acumi= nated — one of them terminating in a long point. These appear like a calix — or they may be more properly a bivalve Glume
Corol. 6 petals — lanceolate — 3 exterior & 3 interior — the exterior narrower & longer — 3

(21) 3 interior broader & shorter — The border of all of ym membreanous apex acuminated. — erect — of a greenish colour, except ye borders which are a little redish, the inner ones of more on a reddish, the colour than the outer.
These may possible be both ye calix, or both ca ye 3 outer ye calix, & inner ye corol. — but as ye filaments rise from ye claws of ye outer, I am inclined to think them ye corol.
Stam. 3 filaments filiform — erect — shorter much shorter yn corol. inserted inot ye outer petals a little above their base. Anthera oblong erect.
Pistil — Germ. above roundish, some what triangular — very large. Stile very short, erect, cylindrical — Stigmata 3, patent or what or some what turned back & down. — downy or hairy — nearest to a down like that of most other grasses.

(22) Pericarp — a very thin & almost transparent capsule, somewht triangular — on a valve & one cell — Seeds — numerous. nearly ovate.
Stems — roundish, with many very fine grooves or channels. — no leaves — ye stem ter= =minates in a long sharpe point. At some distance below ye apex a bunch of flowers are thrown out on one side in a kind of irregular umbel — the in voluer. two ovate leaves broad base — one of them terminating in a long awl-shaped point —
The flower stems which rise from ye stalk are divided in to others of an unequal length some wt like a spike — at the divisions or partial umbels are 2 leaves like ye former — The general

(23) from of ye bunch of flowers in somewt egg-shaped. Each flower is supported on a single flower stalk. Blossom greenish — on banks of brooks & border of Swamps —in my meadow by ye Pond & brook in ye farm.
July 6th Bear's Bush. From Mr. Fuller — grows near Kittle [Kettle] Cove. Gloucester. (uncertain about ye genus)
Calix. A perianth of one leaf: Saucer shape. The cup is very small, divided into 6 roundish, shallow segments.
Corol. One petal. tubular; [saw?] shape nearly, tho^ some wt more tubular or erect. Limb divided into 6 & some times sections? segments, erect, or some what patent. concave.
Stam: From 6 to 8 filaments, erect commonly 7 — flatish — broad at ye base

(24) base; & tapering towards ye apex. inserted into ye corol near its base. Shorter than ye segments of ye corol. & inserted in against each sinus, & some time one or two more against ye middle of ye segt Anthera flatish, erect, along ye apex of ye filament — tapering to a point.
Pistil. Germen ovate, within ye flower; very large. — Stile none, that is perceptable. Stigma very large, capitate, jagged.
Fruit a berry — Seeds 6 or 7 flatish —
It is a low shrub & an ever= =green. Leaves inversely ovate, alternate tho^ irregular — intire — very thick & smooth, even to polish — ye upper disk a very deep green ye lower pale green. short pedicles.
In some of them there is one serra, very small, on each side near ye apex. The blossoms rise from ye axilla of ye leaves. on short flower stalks single — they are white.
