170) opposite on ye stem, ye base embracing ye stem. Hairy on ye under side — ye edge finely ciliate In ye axilla of one of ye leaves of each pair rises 2 small leaves pointing different ways. From ye axilla of ye upper most pair, except one, rises a long, naked fruit stem which at mid-way divide into 2, each bearing a single flower. Stem round — covered with very short hairs. Bloss white.

171) June 4. Trillium an cernum [cernuum]? Gen. Chr. accord. Stem round, large, smooth erect. 6 or 8 or 10 inches high, terminating in 3 large broad leaves, approaching to circular. The apex acute. very short leaf-stalks. Large veins, & is thin, tho^. I should hardly consider it membranaceous. Edge entire. Peduncle is sent off from ye center of ye stem in ye axilla of ye 3 leaves turned down — Disks of ye bloss. parallel with ye ground. Calex & cor. reflected back. Germ 6 acute projected angles. Filaments placed in ye sinuses. Bloss. whitish yellow

The leaves are note revo= =lute — but spreading with ye apex rather incline down ward I doubt whether it be ye same species described by Cold. [Colden] Catesby or Walter. But it approaces very near it.

173) Stam. 4 — Stigma in 3 pts or little coloured globules. Berries not exam

Root small, white, creeping, sending of, at joints, long fibres

Stem 4 inch. high, erect, round — 2 alternate leaves towards ye top, sessile, cordate, acute, 3 nerves, smooth entire

Stem terminates, in a kind of spike raceme of flowers, each supported on a short peduncle two or 3 or more going of in a verticulate form — & terminating with a large number rising from ye end of ye stem. Bloss milk white, an an agreeable smell.
