The general petioles are long — but ye leaf it self has an extremely short petiole Vide Sp. Plant. Called Sasaparilla

No doubt ye same described as nudicaulis — but does not perfectly agree.

Cornus Sanguinea Dogwood — Gen Ch accord

Some has red bark Some light green — Seem to be varieties — wish to exam.

Possibly there may be some difference between ye Europ — & Amern. plants — but they agree as far as described by Linn.

187) June 12th Smilax rotundifolia. Green Briar Gen. Chr. of ye male perfectly accord. Not exam. ye femal —

The stem armed with very strong spines, growing erect from ye stem — not very thick. Nearly (teretis) round — in ye young stem 2 or 3 faint angles — ye barcked clouded with very fine, greenish & browish points — ascending, & winding — a Vine

Leaves unarmed — cordate — accute, very broad & more yn length — 5 to 7 nerves — both surface tinged with a reddish hue. Edge of ye old leaves generally of ye same ting. Petioles benting upward. mid way, at an imperfect joint midway of ye length where 2 thread= shaped long tendrils are sent off

188) off — from ye stem to ye tendril, a leafy appendage & from ye tendrills — ye Petiole set at ye 2 edges with, & base of ye leaf, with short flexible points (dentatis). When ye leaf falls it seperates at this joint. A peduncle, compressed, rising from ye axilla of ye leaves — terminates in a single or simple umball of from 15 to 20 about 15 ryes, or little peduncles, supporting a single flower — Calix of a reddish colour.

Runs on trees & bushes in swamps — twines about shrubs — forming an impene= =trable matt of spines. — Abound at ye [Sacathind?] — in Maryland & Washingt.—

Found this sp. by ye side of ye road near ye bridge in Col. Dodges land.

Many branches with leaves only at ye extremities — below ye leaves, ye flo katkins come out on ye sides of ye naked branches alternate thick pretty thick, or near together, Bark a light gray — like Marshalls humilis but ye leaves — entire, lanceolate — edge slightly ciliate — both surfaces, but especially ye under thick set with a small bright yellow granula of an agreeable smell
