Melica?

Cal. 2 Valves containing 3 florets — ye midle one does not come to maturity. Valves ovate concave — acuminated, nearly equal.

Cor. 2 Val. Valves ovate witht awns, but pointed. One large concave — ye other flat — standing within ye largest, narrow, pointed & ye point somewhat divided.

Between ye 2 florets is a 3d, standing upon a little fruit —

191) stalk, very small — not half ye size of ye other 2 — Valves ye same form — only narrower straiter & less concave. It has Stam & Pist — Could not perceive a seed-bud — but Stam, Style & Stigmas like ye other. Not certain that both are found in ye same floret. It appears to be abortive

St — Threads & Anthera — accord Pist. — accords — Styles like bristles — Stig. oblong woolly

General form of ye husks & florets much like Stoke's plate of a Melica.

Stems, strait, erect, round striated.

Stem leaves very short & broad — breadth above ye

192) ye sheath, or when it goes off from ye sheath, nearly equal to ye length — blunt — & only one or 2 in No. upper part of ye Stem naked. Root leaves grassy — rather short & broad

Bloss. spreading Panicle — branched far after each bloss — on foot-stalk — of a brown colour.

Found it in Knowlton meadow, just over my north ditch in wet-ground — where pollipod grows — Have not noticed it any where else

It must be a N Sp — if a M— [Melica] not time to exam. Vide spn.

It seems between a Melica & Aira.

Collect some days ago in Cape Ann Woods —

Same as in p. 163-164 One species — Close spike like — panicle.

Cal. 2 Val. nearly equal. (When seed ripe expanding) pointed.

Col. (bivalvis) 2 Val. Exterior valve largest rolled round round ye in interior V. — & intirely inclosing it — terminates in a thread shaped Arista, jointed at ye base, & surround with a kind of tuft of white short hairs. The Arista very little twisted — but seems to be is channeled on one side. The upper part — seems to be a little spreading & flattish with fine short hairs or feathers — but too very short & minute so as to be very distinctly seem to examine the

194) The base of ye out V- thick set with short white hairs, en= closing so intirely ye inner V- yt not part is see[n] — & is so still as to render it difficult to roll ye outer val. edge back so as to see ye inner — for it rools more than once round nearly or quite twice round.

Inner valve — smaller rooled in ye same manner. round ye Stam & Pistal. The Anth. & Style & Stig. come out as at a small aparture at ye base of ye arrista.

Nect. not seen accords — Stam & Pisst. accord well

The seed is enclosed in ye corol very close — & both fall from ye calix together it is large — pairs some what tapering.
