Helenium is the Carolina sneeze
wort. I never the heard the name ap-
plied to either species but this possesses
the property most powerfully.
165. Doronicum nudicaule? Mich.
is it described by Walter?
166. This is probably the Physalis obscura
Mich.
167. Scrophularia nodosa Mich.
168. Oenothera biennis? the leaves
of this species are generally entire.
169. Iva imbricata? Walt. Mich.
170. Polygonum pensylvanicum? Mich.
171. P — hydropiper Mich? divaricatum
Walt? —
172. P. — If one of these plants is the
hydropiper and the other the hydropiper-
oides of Mich. the description is cer-
tainly confused. 172. has the stipula
of the later but the leaves and flowers
of the former.
173. Ammannia ramosior Mich?

174. Teucrium canadense Mich.
175. Chironia paniculata?
176. Asclepias — This is the plant
mentioned growing among the rushes in
salt ground. It appears to be an
Asclepias "corumbus nullis, I think
it may possibly be the A. incarnata
Walt: The flower agrees tolerably well
with his description. The leaves he has
not mentioned. The plant however is
a voluble not a decumbent one. Some
new name however must be inscribed
upon it. 227 O.S.
No. 177. Hieracium gronovii?
No. 178. Andropogon macrourus Mich
No. 179. And. dissitiflorum? Mich.
No. 180. And: ternario affin: [led?]
distincuus —
No. 181. And: glaucum?
No. 182. And: ambiguus? Mich.
No. 183. Paspalum ciliatifolium? M
No. 184. Pasp. a. b. are these only
varieties.
No. 185. Pasp. I find the species of

no grass so difficult to ascertain
from the description as the Paspa-
lum. We have I believe 6 or 7 spe-
cies but they appear to me confused
and indistinctly described by both
of our botanists.
183. P. [Paspalum] dissectum Walt.
184. P. distichum W
185. P. membranaceum W.
186. I suspect this to be the real
Digitaria serotina, although
the stem is rather erect, and
the exterior valve though unequal
not minutissima — this is the
least pubescent and 26 [loss] S the moist
villous of any of the species.
187. Panicum is this the pubescens
of Lamark. It agrees with his
description better than 7. 149. O.S.
which were the pilosum of Schreber
if not it ought to have been may be called gluti-
nosum. The vagina & stem when
young exude a viscid substance
to me [what?] frangrant.
188. Trachynotia polystachia [polystachya] Smith.
D. maritima Walt.

189. Agrostis latiflora? Mich.
190. Is this the Phalaris villosa Mich
M. expresses a doubt as to the genus.
So do I.
191. Poa.
192. Poa. This I think a different
species from 92. and better agreeing
with the hirsuta Mich
193. Scirpus ferrugineus Swartz
194. S. puberulus Mich: is 194
with you
195. Erianthus brevibarbis Mich —
this 178 et sequ: the An: alopecuroidi [Andropogon alopecuroides];
& nutans. Are all the species of An:
I have met with as I have not Willde-
nows view of that genus. My knowledge
of it is imperfect. Walters entire ig-
norance of the genus led him into
many difficulties.
196. Urtica cylindrica Mich. where
has it been removed by Willdenow
197. Solanum nigrum Will. var. virgin [virginicum]
198. Chenopodium Manthelminticum
199. Thymbra Walt. Thymus Mich.
200. Ceratiola ericoides Mich. I think
