My dear Sir

Very soon after I had written my last letter to you, I was laid up
by a dangerous inflammation of the breast and lungs from which I
am now recovering. This may be and excuse if I answer your last
letter dated in February and which arrived her only March 11 rather short.

Your promised packet I fear has miscarried. If it went in Dec. our naval
vessels from Charlestown had to go to New York. Will you please to enquire by
which vessel and captain it was forwarded, perhaps it may then be found.
I anxiously long to see it and to get the catalogue of the plants you wish to have.
They shall all be forwarded if I have them, also the Fuci and Confervae I have.

I have sent some of them to Mr. Swarz, some likewise to Turner and expect
their answers soon, but find both are slow in answering.

The Linnaean Transactions I have not, except in extract. One of the volumes
contains a description of a few American Carices. Have you that volume
and are they Carices of our numbers? The Fucus subfuscus I find described by
Turner and wish to have a specimen if you can spare one. I dont think
that it is among mine. The natans I have.

The Frasera grows in Genesee, Pensylvania Butler Co. Ohio State as well as
in the southern states. It is a plant with difficulty to be propagated. The
root is used instead of the Colombo root. My specimens have only 4 stamina
but it seems 5 stamina are also common. I have seen the upper leaves al-
most linear. Where does D. Smith mention that it is the Swertia difformis
L? I sometimes thought L. meant one of our Chironias. The Swertia cor-
niculata I have in a very bad specimen.

I thank you sincerely for the notice of your southern botanists. Of
D. Macbride I expect a great deal to clear up the adversaria of Walter.
When you write again, pray remember my best respects to him and
try to get for me some information of — do forgive the long catalogue
