Aristolochia Longa

OverviewVersions

Description

Aristolochia longa is a species of pipevine in the birthwort family Aristolochiaceae. Due to its resemblance to the uterus, the doctrine of signatures held that birthwort was useful in childbirth, and was given to women upon delivery to expel the placenta. It contains the lethal toxin aristolochic acid shown to be both a potent carcinogen and a kidney toxin. Aka birthwort, pipevine, Dutchman's pipe, long aristolochia, sarrasine.
