Notebook containing descriptions of various diseases and medical conditions and recommended treatments collected by New England physician Samuel Stearns (1747-1809) in circa 1773. There are entries in alphabetical order including instructions on preventing abortion (miscarriage), setting fractures, and for treating melancholy, taken sometimes from the published works of other physicians, such as Richard Brookes (1721-1763), whose prescription for cancer Stearns transcribed. The notebook is dated 1773 and may have been intended for publication as part of a medical dispensatory Stearns was attempting to compile, beginning in 1772. As part of his efforts, Stearns traveled to hear medical lectures in North America, England, Scotland, Ireland, and France. The volume bears the locations including London, England; Québec, Canada; and Pembroke, New Hampshire, on the title page and flyleaf.

Cancer

This seldom admits of a Cure, Unless by Extripation, and therefore the best way is to use Paliatives, Such as Saturnine and Anodyne Medicines outwardly, with a frequent Use of Laxatives and Mercurials inwardly, avoiding every Thing that is irritating, and giving Opiates when necessary.

An Indian Medicine Rx. Garget Leaves. White Lilly Roots, Squooooonk Cabbage. Meadow Plantain aa Contus. & Squeeze out the Juice and let it Stan in the Sun untill it Grows Thick to lb. j of [?] Juice add Ol. Ursa oz. j. Ol. Serpt. Rattle dr. ss apply this as a Plaister with a piece of Black Silk &c. Rx. Fol. Puleg. Saturcia, Fever Bush, Sassafras aa Coq. in aq. Font. Colat. dulcify cum Mellis Let this be drank as a tea to Defend The Stomach.

Lenimentum Crinificum Rx Gm Labdanum dr. vj. Ol. Ursi oz. ij. Mel. oz. ss. Lig. Mericies pulv. dr. iij. Ol. Nucis Moschat dr. j. Bals. peruv. dr. ij. M. f. a. Rub the Head over with an Onion then apply the Linimentum Repeat them thrice a Day for three Months. [Quinzey?] or Use Ung. Pomatum.

Baldness to make

Leniment Depilatorium Rx. Calx. Viv. oz. jv. auripigment oz. jss Rad. Orris oz. j. Nit. & Sulph. aa strong Soap Lees ob. ij. m. Boil to a Consistance add Ol. Caryoph. gutt. xx. m. Let this lie on but half an Hour at a time then Doo the Part over with Common Ol.

Caruncles and Carnosities in the Urethra

Use the Same Regimen as in Virulent Gonorrhea and apply Lenients and Refrigerants Some use Injections but the [Bougies?] are the best methods of Cure which is thus made. Rx. Empl. Commun. cum Pix Burgund oz. ij. Argent. viv. oz. j. Antimo. Crude Pulv. oz. ss m. If there is Signs of a profound Infection use Mercurial Frictions with a Decoction of Sudorifick Woods.

Carus or profound Sleep as a Disease

This is a profound Sleep out of which the patient cannot be waked by Clamours, Shaking or even with the pricking of a Needle. Rx. Asarabacca Majorem. Syrian Mastic, Thyme, Dried Lavender Flowers aa Rubb these together 'till they are Reduced into a very fine Powder for Snuff This good in all Sleepy Diseases and especially for the Disease above Mentioned 'Tis called Pulv. Sternutatorious Errhines, Sneezing Powder, Sinapisms, Blisters on the Feet and Neck Cupping either with or without Scarrification, Strong Frictions on the lower Parts, Stimulating Glysters with the Addition of Sal. Gem, Sal. Marine, or the Root of Squills.
