At a Meeting of the Commissioners of the Society for propagating the Gospel - Boston 4 {October} 1770.

The {Reverend} Mr Samuel Kirkland who has for some time past been engaged in the Indian Service at Oneida, under the direction of the {Reverend} {Doctor} Wheelock, having signified to the Board that the said {Doctor} Wheelock is at present engaged in erecting a College in the vicinity of Cohosse and involved in such a [croud?] and multiplicity of business as forbids the defreying the charges of his Mission, as he would otherwise willingly do: and that he the said Doctor Wheelock hath said, he would be willing that he the said Kirkland should put himself under the care and patronage of this Board. And the said Mr. Kirkland being present having signified his desire to put himself under their care and direction: the Board were of Opinion and signified their minds by a Vote, that they were ready to take the said Mr Kirkland into their service & afford him

him such reasonable Support as the Society's Stock will allow*. And upon further conferring with Mr. Kirkland ~

Voted That he be allowed One hundred pounds {Sterling} {per} annum as a Missionary at Oneida; and inasmuch as he has at great pains & expence acquired the knowledge of the Indian language so as to carry on the service without the charge of an Interpreter.

Voted That in consideration thereof he be allowed the further Sum of Thirty pounds {Sterling} {per} annum: the said allowances to continue until further Order.

Mr Kirkland having brought with him an Indian man called Thomas, a Deacon of the Church; and represented to the Board that he has since January last acted as a Catechist and Schoolmaster among the said Indians, and that he bears an extreme a good character for understanding and Piety.

Voted That he be allowed Twenty pounds {Sterling} {per}

[in left margin of left page] *Provided the Corporation of Harvard College, and the corresponding Members of the Society in Scotland for promoting Christian knowledge will join with the Commissioners in the Appointment of Mr. Kirkland and will contribute to his Support.

per annum until further order, he continuing to perform the services aforesaid; and that he be paid ten pounds {Sterling} for his past services to this time.

Voted That the {Sterling} money aforesaid be paid at the rate of £133.6.8 {lawfull} money for £100_ {Sterling}

That half a years Salary be advanced to Mr. Kirkland, the remainder of his salary to be paid at the years end.

Voted. That the foregoing proceedings be communicated to the Corporation of Harvard College, that they may make such provision out of {Doctor} Williams's donation towards the support of said Mission as they shall think proper. And that the same be likewise communicated to the Commissioners of the Scots Society, that they may, if they think fit assist in carrying on the Service aforesaid.

At a Meeting of the President & Fellows of Harvard College {November} 13. 1770 ~

The {honorable} {Secretary} Oliver haveing communicated to this Board the Proceedings of the [{Commissary}?] of the Society for propagating the Gospel at Boston 1 {October} 1770, by which it appears, that the {reverend} Mr Samuel Kirkland, who has for some time past been engaged in the Indian Service at Oneida, under the direction of the {reverend} {Doctor} Wheelock, had signified his Desire to put himself under their care & direction -- That the [{Commissary}?] had signified their Mind by a Vote, that they were ready to take Mr Kirkland into their Service & to afford him such reasonable Support, as the Society's Stock will allow, provided that the Corporation of {Harvard} College & the corresponding members of the Society in Scotland for promoting Christian knowledge will joyn with the [{Commissary}?] in the Appointment of Mr Kirkland, & will contribute to his Support That {the} [{Commissioners}?], upon conferring with Mr Kirkland had passed the following Votes, Viz

Voted, that he be allowed one hundred pounds Sterling {per} Annum as a Missioner at Oneida & inasmuch as he has at great pains & Expence acquired the knowledge of the Indian Language so as to carry on the Service without the Charge of an Interpreter -

Voted, that in consideration thereof, he be allowed the further Sum of thirty pounds Sterling {per} {Annum}. The {said} Allowance be continued untill further order -
