he got his living. As a remedy
against this deceit we may oppose
the greater necessity of our souls
living both here & thereafter with
God. This is the one thing needful.

6. Another deceit is, a pretence that
we will do such & such thing (evil
only for trials sake, that by our own
experience, we may the better learn
the vanity of sin. & to loath it the more
on this ground, some go to Mass
& to plays &c think themselves
hereby warranted. but God hath
appointed better school's for the
hatred of sin, than the practice of sin
did ever any learn by these means
to hate sin &c?

7. Presuming on some good in us,
or done by us, we perswade ourselves
that this will more than ballance
our sin & wickedness. For as
one infirmity in our Brother shall
cover many virtues; so on the contra
:ry in ourselves one virtue (& that
perhaps but seeming) shall cover
many, not slighter infirmities, but
grosser deformities. Thus the civil
