12. The twelfth deceit is, from our
moderation in sinning - because
we do not go as far as some others
Thus many think they need not
stick to ride upon the Sabbath
tho for trifling cause so they stay
an hour by the way to hear a ser
mon, & do not wholly spend it in
travelling as some do. so some
excuse themselves in oppressing
the poor because they do not go
into those extremes which some
do - the thief thinks himself ex
:cusable in robbing the traveller
because he has left him some money
in his purse & has spared his life.
& perhaps thinks his moderation
renders him, rather praiseworthy,
upon the whole. But can he
make conscience of leaving some
to the traveller & yet make no con
science of robbing him of the rest.
