A superb day, clear, cool. I took a most de-
lightful ride this morning of 16 miles. To the
P.O. 1 m. P. O. by Walden St. & Thoreau St., straight
over Baker’s Bridge to So. Lincoln & Silver Hill, 6 m.
Called on Mrs. Thorndike and had a most delightful
time with her in her flower gardens. Native
plants are introduced everywhere through the grass
and woods. It is a lovely spot. Returning
I went straight by the North Ave. & North Road to
the corner of North & Corner Roads, 4 m. going
over Fairhaven Bridge. From Mrs. T’s to the Bridge
I was 25 minutes. A man had just pulled
in a fine Bass from the Bridge. It weighed
4 lbs. From Corner Road back to the house
5 m. My ride was 16 m. long, and it was
delightful. Saw some Centaurea Cyanus by
the roadside at the corner of Walden & Thoreau
Sts. I must get it. This P.M. after
visiting the strawberry bed, Will & I took his
two canoes and sailed down to Ball’s Hill
where I visited his camp and grounds. It
is a lovely spot. Will owns 60 acres and he
has built a log house which is fitted up with
everything necessary for comfort. He has
introduced lots of natives trees & shrubs and
we wandered about looking at them. We
paddled most of the way back, some 2 ½ m.
I discovered that the Vallisneria like plants
growing under the water by the boathouse at the
Buttricks here, are young Pontederia. I
shall collect some — Hibiscus moschea-
tus { moschatus} is all along the river bank.
