Glorious day, clear, cool. Wheeled to the
P.O. this A.M. At 11:00 o’clock a party of us
went down to Ball’s Hill on a picnic.
I went in one of the boats. Will opened
his cabin and the ladies all took hold
and we had a nice hearty dinner. Will & I
went over a good deal of his ground. They
are very attractive. He has a large
variety of trees & shrubs, gray & white birches,
chestnut, oaks tupelo, poplars, &c. &c.
I did a little collecting here & there.
We came back in the late P.M. On one
of Will’s Hills, Holden Hill, we saw a
large fox-hole with bones & feathers
about the mouth. Our party consisted
of Will & Carrie Brewster, Mrs. Sempler
& Bonner, her daughter, Miss Myers, Miss
Simmons, Miriam & Sheppy Bartlett
& myself. After supper Will & I went with
the canoe, which he had borrowed of Mr.
Lombard, back to the boathouse. We spent a
pleasant hour chatting with the gentleman
there.
