Tuesday. 5 days since last entry.
Spent Friday July 14, quietly reading most
of the time. Finished “Monastery” Very good.
Margi & I took the 4.17 P.M. train Lowell RR
to Cambridge. Spent the night at Mother’s
July 15, Mary & I took the 9 A.M. train to
York Harbor, Me. to spend 2 days with Lucy.
Got there by noon. Saw sun bathers on the
beach. After dinner, Helen, Mag & I took a
walk through the field to the rocks. Picked
a large bunch of Lilium philadelphicum,
which was abundant, for the chuch. Growing
on the open fields near the water, I no-
ticed Comandra umbellata, Pedicularis cana-
densis, Potentilla tridentata, Lilium can. & phil.,
Myrica cerifera, Rosa lucida & nitida, Poten-
tilla pensylvanica, Rhus typhina, Pyrola
rotundifolia, Vaccinium penn. & macrophyllum
&c. Close by the sea, on the cliffs, growing
in very sandy soil, and covering an area of
about a square yard was a patch of
Lythrum hyssopifolia, the plants in full
flower and averaging one inch in height,
a very few being 2 or 3 inches tall. It was
a strange sight. I took some to the house
and pressed them. We arranged the flowers
in the church with Rhus typhina leaves
before tea. In the evening I called
on Bertha Klapp at the York Harbor
House. She seemed glad to see me
Saw Mrs. & Dr. Williams. Lucy has
a very nice cottage about 10 min.
