used by the hens as a shelter from the hot sun. I was very much surprised to find it growing in such a dry situation and I gained the following information from Gus and his mother. Thirty years ago, where the hen yard and barn now stands, was a pond of water supplied by a brook from the hill above. In that pond grew the Button-Bush Some time after, the course of the brook was changed by artificial means and the pond was filled up with sand, deep enough to competely cover the Button Bush. Soon

shoots of the Bush began to appear above the sand and as the spot was used as a wood yard, they were continuously cut down for some time. Finally, the place was turned into a hen-yard and then the shrub gradually assumed its present size. The persistence of its growth seems to me remarkable considering the fact that its habitat is in wet places.
