Apr. 29 — CambridgeI got hope this P.M. in time to spend an hour at the {Botanical Garden}. I haven't been there for nearly two weeks. Found Mr. Watson alone and had a pleasant conversation with him for nearly an hour. He told me that the specific name of was Cornus mas, is a Pre-Linaean name and means masculine, though its application is unknown. ————— Apr. 30 — Cambridge This A.M. I went up to Mother's and got a specimen of Capsella bursa-pastoris on the south slope which I am pressing. This PM

Rollie and I drove to Waverly and I secured the following specimens which are in press. Lindera benzoin. This is growing very freely near the Oaks, between the road and the brook. Equisetum hyemale — (Scouring Rush). Near the brook near the Oaks, growing freely. Chrysosplenium americanum near the brook. Sanguinaria canadensis — Juniperus virginiana — Symplocarpus foetidus. Cambridge. May 6th ——— Drove with my brother George this P.M. through Belmont into Lexington. In Belmont, I secured and am pressing the following plants — { Acer rubrum — male & female. { Caltha palustris. Taraxacum dens-leonis { Viola sagittata. { Veronica serpyllifolia. { Potentilla canadensis In Lexington — the following — Viola cucullata. Ranunculus abortivus. Carex pennsylvanica. Lindera benzoin. Anemone nemorosa. Thalictrum anemonoides. ————— The chill that has been in the air all through April,

has not gone yet and vegetation is stil very backward. The leaves are just appearing on some plants & trees, but on most trees the buds are still closed. Even the Anemone nemorosa & Thalictrum anemonoides I found with difficulty ————— May 7 Cambridge Took a walk round Fresh Pond with Rollie this P.M. I got some Houstonia caerulea in the fields near Fresh Pond, some Equisetum arvense and Potentilla canadensis in Camb. In Belmont some more Equisetum arvense, Saxifraga virginiensis on a sunny sandy slope, some Medicago lupulina. ———

Cambridge. May 12 — Weather very cold and rainy. Hail and sleet today. The leaves find it very hard to come out. Few trees have yet begun. The horse-chestnut and maples and lindens have begun. Hersey Locke gave me some fruit and stems of the fruit and stems of the Liquidambar styraciflua, from New Jersey. The fruit which is compound is very interesting. I am teaching now a class in Botany for College and on Fridays, I have an hour's talk with the [IV, V, & VI] Class on Botany. The Dog tooth Violests and Columbine are out, thought I haven't seen them. ———

Cambridge — May 15th — The sun came out just before sunset, the first time it has been visible for 5 days. A cold easterly storm has kept everything in the shape of vegetation back. The elms & oaks are bare and even the horse chestnuts have not explanded their leaves. After dinner I went up to mother's and got a specimen of Lamium amplexicaule which was near the grape-vine. tinues the leaves will be out very soon. At Waverly I found the Erythronium americanum out in large numbers. I secured 3 specimens with the bulb. I found it rather difficult to get the plant up with the bulb which is nearly 6 in. below the ground and separates from the sheathing leaves & scape very easily. I also got an Anemone nemorosa and Viola cucullata. I found the Trillium & Arisaema coming up also the Osmunda clay= toniana ———

May 18 — Cambridge Snow and hail today. Never was there so backward a spring. The only tree with an appearance of green is the horse chestnut and in that tree the leaflets have not yet expanded. The weather is cold and chilly. ————— May 21st Southboro, Mass. A change in the weather! To-day has been warm and bright with the sun out most of the time. We have scarcely seen the sun for 10 days with the exception of last Tuesday the 16th. I have been off botanizing three times to-days and have secured the following specimens which I have put into my press —
