The Barbarea vulgaris is up but has not formed fruit yet. I have set some out behind the barn. Miss Wood, Rollie's Aunt — sent me to-day some Collinsia verna — ————— May 28. Cambridge. A warm fine growing day. It is wonderful how the leaves have come out within a few days. I found the Chelidonium majus in bud and the Nepeta glechoma in flower. There is a

clump of Euphorbia cyparissias in the short line near St. John's back of Mr. Ware's — ————— The Rumex acetosella is in flower — —————

June 1st. Cambridge — My sister Mary sent me this P.M. a specimen of Actaea spicata, var. rubra — which Georgie gathered in Belmon in the little wood on the left of Concord Ave. which is always so full of flowers. I am pressing it in two parts — She also sent me a Smilacina racemosa and some Arisaemas — —————

June 2nd Cambridge.

I had a great many flowers brought me to-day by the boys for my Friday lecture, Arisaema, Polygala paucifolia, Viola, Geranium maculatum Pyrus japonica, Uvularia sessilifolia, Aquilegia, Pyrus malus, Aesculus hippocastanum, Houstonia caerulea. I talked on cross-fertilization and dimorphism. I am pressing some Uvularia that R.H. Weld brought me from Dedham. He brought me the largest specimen of Arisaema I ever saw. The corm

measures 7 in. in circumference & 2 1/4 in. in diameter. It was growing in the stump of an old tree. —————

June 3rd Cambridge — This P.M. I drove with my sister Mary to Belmont. The vegetation is already beginning to be luxuriant. We went along Concord Av. and I got the following, either on the roadside or just over the fence — Aralia nudicaulis. Viola cucullata. Smilacina racemosa. {Smilacina} bifolia. Geranium maculatum. Iris versicolor. Chelidonium majus.

Thalictrum dioicum. Ribes floridum. { Saxifraga pennsylvanica [pennsylvanica] { are enormous specimens, { 40 in. tall, with very large { leaves one of which measures { 12 in. in length — All these are in press and also some Arenaria lateriflora which was growing on the banks of Fresh Pond in Cambridge — The Berberis vulgaris and Nuphar advena are almost in flower, also the Viburnum lentago. ————— June 4th — Cambridge — Coming home from church

B.J. Legate brought me from Legate Hill, Leominster; picked June 4th, a specimen of Aphyllon uniflorum — I am pressing it. ————— June 6th Cambridge.

I went up to father's for an hour before dinner and collected for the press — Rumex acetosella — Ranunculus bulbosus — Stellaria media — ————— The Symplocarpi which I collected for the Botanical Gardens have been mounted and put

in the herbarium, seeds, young sprouts, the whole plant and the flower — Some of the specimens have been sent to Kew Gardens, London, Eng. ————— Dr. Gray examined carefully one of my specimens of Symplocarpus and from the way in which the leaves wrapped at the base he decided that the rootstock was a Sympodium. ————— June 7th Cambridge

herbarium. He came back with me and was much pleased with my herbarium. While we were talking, Will Brewster came in with my press and a splendid collection of Colorado plants. I shall poison them and lay them away for identification in the fall. My two acorns which I have beening watching for

some weeks are now about 6 in. high. I took them up to Father's and James will set them out. I got some specimens of Medicago lupulina Plantago lanceolata by the side walk just beyond the Harts on Concord Ave. which I put in press. ————— June 9th Cambridge —

Eben Wright sent me some Arethusa bulbosa from Southboro. I have put in press one specimen with a bulb. I talked to my boys to-day on the motion of plants and we analyzed a Horse chestnut blossom. —————
