and put in press Moneses uniflora. Oxalis acetosella. Fruit { Tiarella cordifolia {Fruit} { Streptopus roseus

This evening I took a drive with Will. We turned in by Wheeler's Pond and I found by the roadside a short distance from the main road 4 specimens of Cypripedium acaule.

In three of the specimens the lip was pure white* and the plant is very common here. Gray merely says in describ-

ing the color of the lip "rose purple (rarely white}" but John Robinson in his Flora of Essex {County} makes a variety Cypripedium acaule, var. alba. which I presume is this one. These specimens I shall press and I shall ask Dr. Gray about them.

*with some very faint almost imperceptible purple veins. —————

For Dr. Grays answer, see Aug. 4th.

Shelburne, N.H. July 5th This A.M. Margie and I took a walk to the woods just beyond Wheeler's Pond. The roadside was lined with the Bush Honeysuckle and Bunch Berry. In the woods we picked 22 specimens of

Cypripedium acaule

both white and purple ones. I find that there is a gradation of color between the two extremes and I have put into press 5 specimens which illustrate a gradual change from pure white to rose-purple No 1 being white. The

color refers entirely to the labellum, the color the other parts of the flower being about the same. This seems to show that the plants are the same with this tendency to vary in color. The white one is very common about here though I have found only 5 specimens owing to the lateness of the season. I found the purple and the white flowers growing within 3 feet of each other
