Travel Journal, 1955-1968

Wed. 3-23 - Br in Waycross - Got groc & ate at St Pk - Edisto Beach. Very windy. Long & cold walk - mit coats - resulted in a few wentletraps - 2 largest for me. Thru Chastn to Mt. Pleasant. After phoning several places all full. Good dinner at Frosty Manor.

Thurs. 3-24 - Up soon after five - Br at Geo town 50 miles. Paper mill with wind just right. Pauleys Island - Hammock Shop. Int man. Brookgreen & visit with Mrs. C. Wonderful as ever. To Marje's by noon. After dinner, got room at Gardenia Court. Hard time rousing Mgr. Then he wouldn't take money. To 2nd Ave - nothing we wanted. Took Janie to Clardy's for lubricating.

Back to M. Saw Earl for a minute. He spending his time in his own room to avoid children & us. Helen Dees spent evening till we were ready to leave. M. very worried about E. Motel man couldn't be found.

Fri. 3-25 - Left money on dresser. Drove up beaches - much bldg. Breakfast at Cherry Grove on Hwy. Stopped for long walk at Holdens - no w.t. Again at Long Beach 4 w.t.! SPt at 2 & lunch at quack shack in sight of Myly's. Hard time getting in. She asleep & Earl repairing el. Tour of house. Looks hopeless. Left after drink & spent night at Wilmington - very nice motel. Drove around 5 mile azalea park. Steak

at cafeteria & back to bed before 9. Worn out not with mileage but shelling.

Sat. 3-26 - Decided we had better take shortest route. Early br in Wilm at Greek cafe & kept going North. Bypasses around Goldsboro & Wilson a big help. Rocky Mt. not so good. Early lunch & mid aft. snack. Reached SS between 6 & 6:30. 2745 miles! Dinner at home.

Fri. 5-20 - Left soon after 7, stopping by to get the lobsters Starr had asked for. Nonie was ready and we took off reaching Norfolk by back roads about 2 (one S.T.) Dinner at 2:30 ST & left at 3:30. Got to Nags Head 5:30; found a nice cottage with kitchen near Manteo turn off. Grocery near by.

Sat. 5/21 - Took ferry down to Hatteras with many stops - no shells worth stopping for but fine beaches. To Cape H where there were crowds, so we picked a good spot and ate lunch on beach. Drove around H. several times and on up for 4 o'clock ferry. Steak dinner at home. Very tired as I had slept porely.

Sun. 5/22 - Took me a long time to get to sleep tho I took a pheno barb. Woke at 5:45. Prue on beach. Came in with 3

fish a man had given her. They were fine for breakfast. We drove to Wright Mem & found we also had time to go to Roanoke Island. Went S. to Wanchese & all around then N. to Ft Raleigh; went all over Lost Colony theater. To Mother Vineyard where there is a winery. Back over bridge to find Oasis not open, so to Arlington where we had a very good dinner. Soon after we came back to the house it started raining. I had a good nap, then we had a gully washer when P & I played scrabble. Light supper & reading till bed time.
